A jury acquitted three U.S. sailors of raping a 15-year-old Australian schoolgirl while on leave last year. Damian Hargrove, 21, of New Orleans; Daryl Benson, 21, of Texas; and Timothy Tolbert, 25, of Georgia were found not guilty of 12 charges after spending more than a year in jail. The sailors were on leave from the San Diego-based aircraft carrier Constellation when the girl alleged that she was raped May 5, 1997, at a hotel in Perth, on the southwest coast of Australia.

And unlike most, she testified and a jury believed her. Heros Hakopian, a restorer of antiques, was convicted last August of aggravated rape, aggravated indecent assault and kidnaping--guilty on all counts. There the sordid case of the Queen vs. Hakopian normally would have ended.

A 28-year-old man charged with multiple counts of rape and attempted rape in Australia was arrested Friday in the Hollywood area by members of a fugitive task force, authorities said. Benjamin William Ainsworth was charged in April with attacking three women at knifepoint in Adelaide, Australia, between 2000 and 2003. He was arrested at a youth hostel where he was believed to be staying.
