Double-murder charges against a 35-year-old Van Nuys man accused of raping and killing two female transients were dismissed Wednesday because DNA tests showed that someone else sexually assaulted one of the victims. A gunman assaulted a pair of Japanese students Wednesday night, robbing a man of $30 and sexually assaulting his female companion after ordering her into his car, police said. The 20-year-old man and 18-year-old woman, who are in the United States learning English, were walking in the 18200 block of Plummer Street at 9:40 p.m., when a man approached them and threatened them with a handgun, said Officer La Donna Cissell, an LAPD spokeswoman.

A jury deliberated less than four hours Wednesday before acquitting an actor of raping a 16-year-old extra last summer on the set of "Sister Act II." The jury also found Ron Johnson, 21, not guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman, who came forward after seeing news accounts of the extra's accusations. She accused Johnson of raping her in 1992 after she met him at a house party.

A 19-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of raping and robbing two teachers in a kindergarten classroom at the 99th Street Elementary School as they prepared for the academic year, police said. No students were on campus at the time Monday, but several area residents were angry that school and police officials released no information about the case for two days. "They had a rapist running around here," said Jessica Conley, whose four children attended the school.

A teenage ranch hand who cared for horses at the rural home of Jean Schwartz, a 73-year-old woman found beaten and strangled last year, has been convicted of her sexual assault and murder. Antonio Rodriguez, who was 18 at the time of Schwartz's slaying in September 1997, was found guilty Friday in Santa Monica Superior Court of killing his employer while committing rape with a foreign object. Schwartz's bloodied, nearly naked body was dumped along a remote road near her Monte Vista Drive home.

The Los Angeles murder rate shot up 15.7% for the first nine months of the year, police said Thursday, with the most dramatic increase coming in the Rampart Division, where officers last week launched a high-publicity offensive to quell rampant drug dealing. The last defendant charged in the gang rape of a 16-year-old Birmingham High School student pleaded no contest Thursday to one felony count of assault with intent to rape. "The convictions ensure that all three defendants in adult court will be doing time in state prison for committing this horrible attack on a totally vulnerable and helpless victim," Deputy Dist. Atty. Eduards R. Abele said. Nathaniel Sanchez, 19, of Van Nuys, faces two to four years in state prison, Abele said.

Serial rape suspect Vincent Henry Sanchez, accused of assaulting 11 Simi Valley women over the past five years, pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday. Sanchez, 30, who is also a suspect in the disappearance and slaying of a 20-year-old Moorpark woman, also pleaded not guilty to burglary and kidnapping charges during a brief hearing in Ventura County Superior Court.

A 12-year-old girl told police she was forced into a lime-green van at gunpoint Tuesday and raped before being dropped off in the Jefferson Park area of Los Angeles, authorities said. About four to six men reportedly kidnapped the girl about 4 p.m. as she walked with her grandparents near West 27th Street and Arlington Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Officer Jason Lee. The men allegedly wore ski masks and at least one had a semiautomatic weapon, the girl told authorities.

Richard Alan Minsky, an alleged con man accused of preying on women across the country, was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on charges stemming from sexual assaults committed in the Los Angeles area in 1998. After a preliminary hearing, Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Connor ruled Wednesday that there is enough evidence to require the 56-year-old Massachusetts native to stand trial.

After deliberating for two days, a Los Angeles jury deadlocked Friday on whether to recommend the death penalty for a man who raped and killed two women, one of whom had appeared as a body double for Janet Leigh in the movie "Psycho." Eleven of the 12 jurors voted in favor of death for Kenneth Dean Hunt, 34. With the other juror holding out for a life sentence, Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Connor declared a mistrial in the penalty phase of the case.

A Los Angeles Municipal Court judge on Thursday dismissed all charges against a police officer who had been accused of raping a woman last May in Pasadena, saying the woman told different stories about the incident. Judge Elva Soper dismissed the case against 29-year-old Mark Mireles of Pasadena, describing testimony by the alleged victim at a preliminary hearing as marred by memory lapses and inconsistent statements.

The former wife of a man accused of raping a female porn star pleaded no contest Thursday to trying to dissuade the actress from testifying. Rebecca Ethel Holland, 33, of Los Angeles was sentenced to a year in county jail and five years' probation. She was accused of threatening the woman that her picture would be in newspapers if she testified. Most actresses in adult films perform under fake names.
