Another hearing was set Tuesday for the man suspected of posing as a talent scout to lure 14 UCLA students to his apartment and secretly videotaping his sexual assaults on them. Michael Peers, 50, is due back in court April 4. He remains jailed, with bond set at $38,500. Prosecutors and defenders said they are still reviewing evidence, but expect the trial to begin April 14. The UCLA women allegedly were lured to an apartment in 1998 with promises of jobs in the entertainment industry.

Nineteen criminal charges were filed Thursday against a man accused of raping seven women since Christmas after telling them he was a faith healer who could cause great harm if they refused his demands, police said. Carlos Hugo Catalan, 49, has been held on $2 million bail since his arrest Jan. 13 by Southwest Division officers. Detectives said the victims are Latinas between 12 and 43 years old who had known Catalan for years as a curandero, or faith healer.

A Sylmar man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl on her way to school, authorities said Wednesday. Carlos Martinez Gomez, 21, allegedly forced the Newhall student into his car as she walked to William S. Hart High School on Tuesday morning, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Cortland Myers of the Santa Clarita station. He said Martinez, an acquaintance of the girl's family, approached her about 7:30 a.m.

An unidentified woman is alleging that former welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya sexually assaulted her, a charge De La Hoya has denied through his attorney. De La Hoya has not been arrested nor questioned by police, who are investigating the allegation, which was made at about 3:30 a.m. Monday after the woman and two other females were asked to leave a party at De La Hoya's West L.A. home. LAPD officers answered a call from one of the three ejected party-goers at about 2:30.

A woman who was raped in a commercial parking garage where no previous assaults had occurred cannot obtain compensation from the garage owner, the California Supreme Court ruled Thursday. Because the garage in question had been crime-free for 10 years, the landlord had no duty to provide guards or other security measures, the court majority ruled as it rejected a claim by a woman who was raped in a Los Angeles garage as she left her car in the morning to go to work.

One of two men who authorities say carjacked a couple in Sherman Oaks, raped the wife and beat the husband should face trial on the allegations, a judge ruled Wednesday. Brian Lyn Richie, 24, was held to answer on charges of rape, sodomy, oral copulation, kidnapping and robbery by Municipal Judge John P. Doyle. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Eduards Abele.

An illegal immigrant from Mexico has told federal authorities he was forced to watch as up to 20 men raped and sodomized his aunt and girlfriend last week while the three were held hostage by smugglers in a Canoga Park apartment. Between the sexual assaults, Angel Garcia said, the smugglers beat him and another man with wrenches. Both men were driven from the Roscoe Boulevard apartment to a remote area near Moorpark, in Ventura County, and dumped in a field.

A convicted child rapist, just five months out of prison, has been charged with the kidnapping and sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl and the abduction and attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl. The suspect, Gary Maurice Townes, 31, of Long Beach, appeared in Compton Municipal Court Monday and pleaded not guilty. Police arrested Townes Thursday following a traffic stop in South Los Angeles. The car he was driving had expired registration tags, police said.

A Culver City man arrested Friday is suspected of committing at least 10 rapes and attempted sexual assaults on the Westside, including a recent string of attacks in Culver City and Mar Vista, police said. Hours after Oscar Salazar, 20, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, officers linked him to at least 10 actual or attempted sexual crimes, the Los Angeles Police Department announced at a news conference at the Pacific Area station.

A former choral teacher who was charged with the 1998 rape of a 13-year-old female student pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Antelope Municipal Court, officials said. Wayne Martin, 50, of Palmdale, was charged with forcible rape, child molestation and sexual intercourse with a minor under 16, said Phil Rabichow, head deputy district attorney at the county office in Lancaster.
