A woman who settled a crack debt by allowing her 13-year-old daughter to be raped was sentenced in Detroit to life in prison. Susan Barbier, 29, was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, the charge for rape in Michigan. Prosecutors said Barbier woke her daughter in the middle of a night in May, 1988, and took her to the apartment of Anthony Sawyer, 28, where the girl was raped. After the attack, Barbier and Sawyer allegedly went out together and took drugs.

LaJuan Ewing, 17; Jeffery Jackson, 17; Lamar Toney, 17; and a 16-year-old juvenile had been barred from attending regular classes at River Rouge High School after they were arrested Oct. 9.

A paroled rapist arrested after a woman was found in his car trunk confessed to killing three teen-age girls and a woman and led investigators to their shallow graves, authorities said Thursday. Leslie Allen Williams, a 39-year-old habitual offender from Detroit, had been released from prison in August, 1990. Authorities said a witness had seen Williams try to abduct and rape the woman found in his trunk while she was laying a wreath at her mother's grave Sunday.

A jury convicted a longtime sheriff Thursday of raping a woman at a law enforcement convention last October, rejecting his claim that the sex was consensual. Macomb County Sheriff William Hackel, 58, faces up to 15 years in prison on each of two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He will be held in the Isabella County Jail pending sentencing at an undetermined date.

A judge on Friday dismissed a teen-age gang-rape victim's challenge to Michigan's voter-approved law cutting off state-funded abortions for poor women. Wayne County Circuit Judge John H. Hausner ruled the law bars an abortion for the girl, since her life is not endangered by the pregnancy. He said the law does not violate Michigan's Constitution. The American Civil Liberties Union brought the suit on behalf of the girl, and its lawyers promised to appeal.

Fugitive Daniel Andron liked to keep in touch with his alleged victims and with the police who were looking for him, authorities said, but he apparently made one call too many. Several months after he fled the Detroit area, Andron, 26, a construction worker, was arrested in Anaheim last Friday after he placed a call to a police detective in Illinois, officials said.

A 17-year-old boy accused of impregnating his 12-year-old sister was arraigned Wednesday on a felony rape count, but prosecutors are considering an agreement that would allow him to plead guilty to a misdemeanor. The girl's family, immigrants who have been in the United States on green cards for about a year, went to court to win the right for her to have a late-term abortion in Kansas.

An Ingham County Circuit Court jury deliberated about 13 hours Friday, Monday and Tuesday before finding Parker guilty of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Judge Thomas Brown set sentencing for Oct. 14. Parker faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
