I still don't know why Sallie and I bothered to go to that party in the forest slope above Aspen. The people were all older than us and dull in a distinguished way, old enough that we, at 40-ish, passed as the occasion's young ladies. The house in Colorado was great -- if you like Ralph Lauren-style chalets: a rugged luxury cabin at 9,000 feet, complete with elk antlers, lots of kilims, and a wood-burning stove.

HENDERSON, Nev. - In 2009, Samantha Geimer was watching the daytime talk show "The View" from her then-home in Hawaii when the panel took up the topic of her encounter at age 13 with director Roman Polanski. "It wasn't rape-rape," co-host Whoopi Goldberg said, setting off a firestorm of criticism. In fact, it was "rape-rape" by nearly any definition except the charge to which Polanski pleaded guilty (unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor)

The unintended consequence of your editorial on the endless fine points of rape ("Rape and Rights," Aug. 1) will discourage most women from filing rape charges. Instead they will seek solace and redemption in therapy well away from an open-ended court case. Alleged rapists are entitled to a speedy trial, and the state should always give it to them. All rape trials should begin within 60 days. Justice delayed is justice denied. Bob Munson Newbury Park

Re "Motel Sexual Assault Prompts Warning" (March 21): In the wake of such landmark cases as Mike Tyson's rape trial and the conclusion of the (William) Kennedy (Smith) case (not to mention Anita Hill's allegations), society is beginning to address its attitudes about sexual assault and rape. Rape and sexual assault are violent crimes, and for too long society has looked the other way or blamed the victim. In the reporting of the motel sexual assault in Anaheim, the story said, "None of the victims was seriously hurt."
