A popular band leader was convicted Thursday of stalking, raping and sexually assaulting seven women in a case in which one victim took the unusual step of going public to warn other women and put pressure on the Police Department to make the investigation a top priority. As the guilty verdicts were being read, Kenneth Bogard turned to rape victim Kim Caldwell and mouthed the words, "I didn't do it." Caldwell stared coldly at Bogard, pointed directly at him and said firmly, "Yes, you did."

The reasoning seemed disarmingly simple: In a time of fiscal crisis and over-crowded prisons, why should California spend hundreds of millions of dollars retaining prisoners so sick, aged, paralyzed or otherwise infirm that they are no longer a threat to the public? And so the Legislature passed a bill to permit medical paroles as both a humanitarian gesture and a way to save money for the state. But theory has collided with the reality that prosecutors will fight vigorously to keep even incapacitated prisoners behind bars, that the parole board can be a highly skeptical body and that some prisoners committed heinously brutal acts before they fell victim to the medical problems that rendered them "safe.

A woman was raped at knifepoint in a Nordstrom fitting room by an assailant who lay in wait as shoppers thronged the store, police said Monday. The 49-year-old San Diego woman was in a fitting room of the department store in the Fashion Valley shopping mall Sunday afternoon when she was attacked, said San Diego Police Sgt. Steve Hinton. Investigators said the victim had been in the same fitting room minutes earlier, and had gone back to try on additional clothes.

Police are investigating the alleged rape of a 22-year-old woman in the bathroom of a house being used to film MTV's "The Real World," officials said Tuesday. The woman told police she believes that a man she met at a nearby nightspot slipped a drug into her drink, took her to the house and raped her, possibly while the assault was filmed.

The night she was raped, Kim Caldwell wanted to die. A serial rapist broke into her Pacific Beach home at 3 a.m. and put a knife to her throat as she lay in her bed. For an hour she was violated and terrorized by the masked attacker. After she reported the rape to police and was taken to a hospital for an evidence-gathering pelvic examination, she returned home confused and in pain. "For three days I couldn't sleep," she said. "If I thought about what happened, I vomited.

A 10-year-old girl was reunited with her family after a two-year separation that followed her father being wrongly accused of raping her. The family's ordeal began in 1989 when the girl was sexually assaulted as the family slept in their apartment at a Navy complex. For more than a year, she insisted to police, doctors and social workers that a stranger entered through the window, took her outside, sexually assaulted her and returned her.

Fisher's father, Jack, said Thursday his son "categorically denies" any wrongdoing. Fisher was on an official weekend recruiting trip to San Diego State.

Outfielder Kevin Mitchell of the San Francisco Giants denied an accusation that he forcibly raped an acquaintance, a Chula Vista police detective said. Mitchell, the 1989 National League MVP, was arrested for investigation of rape and other charges Saturday afternoon at his off-season home. Detective Tom Everett said: "He denied forcible rape. I'm not telling anything else he said."

Criminal charges against outfielder Kevin Mitchell of the San Francisco Giants were dropped Monday after a woman who alleged that she had been raped by Mitchell told authorities she did not want to pursue the case. Mitchell, 29, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday on charges of rape, rape with a foreign object, false imprisonment and battery. He was arrested Dec. 1 and was free on $61,000 bail. The San Diego woman told police that Mitchell had assaulted her on Nov.

The San Diego County district attorney said Friday there is insufficient evidence to file sexual assault charges against baseball player Matt Fisher of Chatsworth High School. The announcement ended an investigation that began Sunday, when a woman accused Fisher of sexually assaulting her after a fraternity party. Fisher was in San Diego for a recruiting trip to San Diego State.

Kenneth Bogard, 37, a popular bandleader and singer convicted of raping and attacking seven women in assaults that terrorized women for two years, was sentenced Thursday to 96 years in prison. The case gained widespread attention when one of the victims, Kim Caldwell, allowed the news media to use her name and show her face. Police credit Caldwell with helping rally the community and assisting in the investigation that led to the arrest of Bogard.

An alleged rape in a Nordstrom fitting room that shocked the city was a fabrication by a 49-year-old woman who is "an unhappy person," police officials said Friday. At a crowded news conference, police said the woman who had reported being raped and robbed at knifepoint on Jan. 3 recanted after being confronted with evidence that contradicted her story.

Mark (Gator) Anthony, an internationally prominent skateboard champion, was being held in County Jail at Vista on Wednesday after turning himself in to police, saying he had murdered a woman at his home in Carlsbad and then buried her body in the desert in Imperial County. Anthony, 24, who friends say had recently changed his name from Mark Rogowski, told San Diego police on Tuesday that he had "physically and sexually assaulted the victim and subsequently strangled her."

A 23-year-old Massachusetts man being held in a Las Vegas jail on suspicion of rape is no longer considered a suspect in the serial slayings of five women in the city's Clairemont and University City neighborhoods, San Diego police said Thursday. Louis Angel Mandez moved from New Bedford, Mass., to San Diego in October, about a month after 42-year-old Pamela Gail Clark and her 18-year-old daughter, Amber, were stabbed to death in University City on Sept. 13, authorities said.
