Andrew Luster knows what people are saying. They say he is a millionaire rapist who preys on young women. They say he slips sedatives into their drinks before attacking them. They say he likes to videotape his assaults so he can watch them over and over. Luster denies it all. "This is ridiculous, overblown and outrageous," said Luster, who is being held in Ventura County Jail on $10-million bail for 50 counts of kidnapping and rape in connection with alleged assaults on three women.

Police said Thursday that they believe the two men who abducted and raped a 17-year-old Japanese exchange student in Oxnard earlier this week also tried to snatch a woman off a Moorpark street last week. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department and the Oxnard Police Department are joining forces and expanding the search for the men countywide.

Authorities are investigating a possible link between the suspected Simi Valley serial rapist and the disappearance of Megan Barroso, a 20-year-old Moorpark woman whose bullet-riddled car was found three weeks ago under a freeway overpass. A team of sheriff's deputies searched the Simi Valley home of Vincent Henry Sanchez late Tuesday night, seizing an assault rifle, women's clothing, videotapes and other possessions.

An Oxnard man accused of raping and killing an Oxnard mother of four should die in the gas chamber if convicted of the crime, Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury said Tuesday. The district attorney's office will seek the death penalty against Christopher James Sattiewhite, 23, who already is serving a 21-year state prison sentence on an unrelated rape conviction, Bradbury said Tuesday.

Rape suspect Andrew Stuart Luster was held on $10-million bail Wednesday after prosecutors filed 19 new charges and told a judge they have evidence the wealthy scion of cosmetics magnate Max Factor has left victims around the globe. Luster, a 36-year-old Mussel Shoals resident, now faces 40 criminal charges in connection with three alleged rapes in which authorities say the victims were sedated with a date-rape drug and videotaped.

Detectives on Wednesday were searching for a man in connection with the rape of a 22-year-old Thousand Oaks woman at a Newbury Park motel where she works as a maid. Sheriff's deputies said the attack occurred about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when a man slipped into the room the woman was cleaning at the motel on West Hillcrest Drive. He immediately began punching her in the face and then raped her. During the attack, she tried to fight back, but he choked her until she blacked out, deputies said.

A knife-wielding man who attacked a 17-year-old girl in her bed is believed to be the serial rapist who has prowled the streets of this city for four years, police said Thursday. Councilman Paul Miller wants local businesses to contribute to a reward fund that aims to catch a serial rapist. At its meeting tonight, the City Council plans to debate offering a reward for information leading to arrest and conviction in three rapes and five sexual assaults since June 1996. Two weeks ago, Councilman Glen Becerra proposed the idea of spending city money on a reward, but now Miller wants service clubs, businesses and charitable organizations to contribute too.

A suspected serial rapist was charged with 57 criminal counts Tuesday for allegedly kidnapping, raping and violently assaulting 11 women in Simi Valley during the past five years. Vincent Sanchez, a 30-year-old part-time movie studio employee, appeared briefly in Ventura County Superior Court but did not enter a plea. His arraignment was postponed to Aug. 10. Sanchez is being held on $1-million bail.

Justin Merriman plunged a knife into college student Katrina Montgomery's neck, and, as she begged for her life, beat her with a wrench and slit her throat, a witness testified Friday. A state appellate court is questioning whether a Ventura County judge violated the constitutional rights of an accused rapist by setting bail at $10 million. Andrew Luster, a 36-year-old heir to the Max Factor cosmetics fortune, has been in jail for four months on charges that he drugged and sexually assaulted three women at his Mussel Shoals home. Defense lawyers say that the bail set by Superior Court Judge Art Gutierrez in August is unreasonable.
