Ida Ballasiotes' first thought, upon hearing the criminal history of the man who'd raped and killed her daughter, came in the form of a question. What was this guy doing out of jail? she wondered. After all, the authorities had known Gene Raymond Kane was dangerous. He'd attacked two other women 13 years before, and he'd been sitting in prison ever since. He'd received no treatment during that time, mainly because a mental hospital considered him too dangerous to handle.

A 41-year-old Washington state man obsessed with a 15-year-old Kennewick, Wash., girl, faces child rape and attempted murder charges after his homemade bomb blew the leg off her teenage boyfriend's father, police said Wednesday. Timothy Michael Goff of Port Orchard, Wash., was arrested Monday in Washington, police said. Police said Goff planted a bomb in the driveway of the 17-year-old's home on Sept. 27. It exploded when the boy's father, Barry Hornstein, kicked it.

Attorneys for a Spokane, Wash., woman on Tuesday released the names of 20 current and former Cincinnati Bengals accused in a civil lawsuit of raping her or standing by while she was assaulted nearly two years ago. The complaint says the plaintiff, identified only as Victoria C and described as a 98-pound mother of four, "was brutally and sadistically raped . . . over two hours, by 13 to 15 Bengal players who were two to three times her size, on the 'team floor' " in a hotel on Oct. 3, 1990.

The imprisoned schoolteacher who gave birth last week to a second child fathered by a former student she was convicted of raping will not face additional charges. Mary Kay Letourneau is being punished sufficiently under a prison sentence of seven years and five months for her 1997 guilty plea, King County, Wash., prosecutor Norm Maleng said. Letourneau's sentence had previously been suspended and she was freed, but three days later, on Feb.

A woman who alleges she was gang-raped at a Seattle hotel in 1990 has sued the Cincinnati Bengals and 15 unidentified players. The woman alleges that she was repeatedly raped by the football players for two hours while as many as 20 people watched. Richard Eymann, a Spokane attorney representing the woman, said the suit was filed in King County Superior Court in Seattle. The civil lawsuit asks for unspecified damages for the woman's emotional and physical suffering.

Several Cincinnati Bengals have been served with subpoenas in connection with a lawsuit that alleges members of the team raped a woman in a Tukwila, Wash., hotel in October of 1990. The Cincinnati Enquirer and KIRO-TV in Seattle reported the subpoenas were served while the team practiced Saturday for Sunday's game at Seattle, which the Bengals won, 21-3. KIRO reported that six players were served with subpoenas, but did not identify the players.

The teenage boy who is the father of Mary Kay Letourneau's new baby--the same boy she is imprisoned for raping--says he's overjoyed that she has given birth to their second daughter. "I'm very excited and can't wait to go back and see my next baby," 15-year-old Vili Fualaau said from Paris. Fualaau spoke to the syndicated television show "Inside Edition," which plans to air the interview today.

Four more present or former Cincinnati Bengal players have countersued a Washington woman who claims she was gang-raped by several Bengals two years ago in Seattle. Altogether, 11 of the 20 accused of rape or witnessing the rape have filed counterclaims. Safeties David Fulcher and Rickey Dixon and former cornerback Lewis Billups jointly filed their countersuit in Seattle. Former running back Ickey Woods filed a separate counterclaim.
