An investigation into the slaying of a Placentia girl that baffled law enforcement officials for eight years came to an end this week when authorities charged a convicted rapist in connection with her death. Raymond J. Barthlett, 34, was arrested Friday after DNA evidence linked him to the slaying of 14-year-old Wendy Osborn. She was abducted Jan. 20, 1987, while walking to school and was later raped and killed.

Two years after they were charged with raping an unconscious 16-year-old girl, the three teenagers remain in lock-step; they haven't plea-bargained, they won't testify against one another, and they still chat during breaks in their ongoing trial. Their lawyers, too, present a united front. Some might question whether they have any choice, inasmuch as one defendant's wealthy father -- a high-ranking Orange County sheriff's official -- is helping pay the legal fees for all three suspects.

Serial killer Gerald Parker, dubbed the "bedroom basher" for a rampage of sex slayings that terrorized Orange County in the 1970s, was sentenced to death Thursday after an emotional hearing in which victims' families spoke of their years of anguish and loss. Using new DNA technology and a computer database, prosecutors developed the case against Parker 17 years after he raped and murdered five Orange County women and killed the unborn child of a sixth woman.

An eighth victim of the Santa Ana serial rapist has stepped forward, police said. A 23-year-old woman reported the attack to police after attending a community awareness meeting Tuesday in the area of the attacks. She said she was attacked on July 30 as she was waiting for a ride to work. Her attacker is believed to be the rapist who has eluded capture and is terrorizing a 30-block area in north Santa Ana, said Santa Ana police Sgt. Raul Luna.

A carpet installer jailed on suspicion of raping and murdering a Laguna Hills customer in October has also been charged in the rape and robbery of a Costa Mesa woman two weeks earlier, authorities said Thursday. Eric Wayne Bennett, 23, was indicted Wednesday by the Orange County Grand Jury on charges stemming from both incidents after prosecutors presented two days of testimony. A Superior Court jury Friday convicted an Air Force veteran of sexually assaulting two Orange County women he lured out on dates and then drugged and raped them. Dick Tilman Hunt, 69, of Long Beach, sat with his head down as the verdict was read. The jury of six men and six women took two days to find Hunt guilty of six counts of rape, sodomy and unlawful penetration with a foreign object.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating the man who kidnapped and tried to rape a 14-year-old last month as she walked to school. A man approached the victim at Dale Street and Katella Avenue shortly before 9 a.m. on Dec. 2, said Police Sgt. Make Handfield. When the man asked her if she needed a ride, the girl ran to a liquor store. He continued to follow her when she returned to the street and caught up with her in an alley, where he dragged her into his car, Handfield said.

A 20-year-old Cypress College student was raped in her own car Tuesday after being abducted from a campus parking lot, police said. According to investigators, the woman, whose identity was withheld, was entering her car--a 2000 black Honda Accord with paper license plates from a Gardena dealership--after leaving class about 11 a.m. A man wielding a knife forced her into the car, pushed her over to the passenger's seat and drove away with her.

Police are asking for the public's help in finding a man who assaulted a teenage girl in her Irvine home. The attack occurred about 4 p.m. Friday near Misty Run and and West Yale Loop, Irvine police said. When the girl came home, she found a man in his late teens in the house. He sexually assaulted her, then ran away just as the victim's mother came home, according to the police report. Police arrived within minutes and searched the area, but the man escaped.

Sheriff's investigators Thursday released a sketch (below) of a rapist who attacked a woman jogging on a bike trail on Old El Toro Road on Tuesday. The 31-year-old victim told police she had been running along the trail at 11:30 a.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and pulled her into the bushes. He then assaulted her and fled the scene. The victim was treated at a hospital and later released.

Orange County sheriff's deputies are seeking a rapist who attacked a woman as she jogged in broad daylight Tuesday. The 31-year-old victim was jogging on an abandoned road adjacent to bustling El Toro Road in Mission Viejo, near Marguerite Parkway, Lt. Hector Rivera said. "The suspect grabbed her from behind and pulled her into the bushes at 11:34 a.m.," he said. The woman was treated by doctors but did not require hospitalization, authorities said.

Police are searching for a man who reportedly attacked a woman, forced her into a car and raped her. The incident occurred early Sunday morning on Glenneyre Street as the woman was returning home, police said. The attacker overpowered her, placed tape over her mouth and pushed her into an older-model, brown four-door sedan. She eventually managed to free her hands and escape, police said. The attacker is described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s with sandy blond hair and dark eyes.

A 40-year-old terminally ill cancer patient was raped, beaten and robbed by a masked assailant who entered and left her room at Prince of Peace Abbey here by traveling over the roof, police said Wednesday. The victim said the assailant, who had at least one accomplice, a woman, may have been inside the abbey last week, when a burglary occurred. The ill woman, who was staying in a guest room at the Benedictine monastery, was awakened about 1 a.m.
