David Alvarez, his head shaved and wearing jail blues, didn't speak during his brief appearance before Superior Court Judge Edward Brodie. Instead, his attorney, James Farley, told Brodie they "deny each and every count."

A 14-year-old girl told police she was kidnaped from the parking lot of a Ventura convenience store by five people, repeatedly raped and then returned to the store's parking lot 42 hours later, police reported Tuesday. Although the abduction was said to have occurred Sunday, police said details were still sketchy and the victim had yet to be interviewed by a detective. The girl told an officer that she was abducted at 1:30 a.m.

Using DNA evidence, sheriff's investigators have arrested a Thousand Oaks tile setter they suspect is a serial rapist responsible for at least three sexual assaults in the city during the past four years. Homicides in Ventura County sharply increased last year, ending with the slaying in December of Santa Paula auto dealer Tony Bridges. Bridges' death was the county's 48th homicide in 1991, more than double the 20 recorded in 1990. Since the 1930s, when the Ventura County medical examiner-coroner's office began keeping records, the highest number of homicides in one year was 59, in both 1974 and 1979, Deputy Coroner Craig L. Stevens said.
