UFC 172 takes place Saturday night with the UFC running Baltimore for the first time. The event is headlined by a UFC light heavyweight title contest between champion Jon Jones and challenger Glover Teixeira. Jones, a dominant champion and a fighter considered by many to be the pound for pound best in the world, is coming off the most competitive fight of his career against Alexander Gustafsson. The question is how Jones will respond in his next fight against a competitor who has won 20 straight fights dating back to 2006, when his training partner Chuck Liddell was still UFC light heavyweight kingpin.

Now it truly is a Ronda Rousey card. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight title-holder Rashad Evans has withdrawn from the Feb. 22 UFC 170 card at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas with a leg injury. That scraps Evans' co-main event against former Strikeforce champion Daniel Cormier (13-0) and leaves Rousey's women's bantamweight title defense against 2008 Olympic wrestling silver medalist Sara McMann (7-0) as the sole fight of significant interest on the pay-per-view card.

Ronda Rousey's armbar streak is over. Her attention is now on the opponent's liver. Rousey successfully defended her Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight title Saturday night at Mandalay Bay, delivering a left knee to challenger Sara McMann's stomach area, a notoriously painful liver shot that ended the bout by technical knockout 1 minute 6 seconds into the first round. "I knew if I zoned in on that one spot … ," Venice's Rousey (9-0) said after a victory that followed eight straight wins by armbar submission.

In Aug. 2009, Rashad Evans faced an important decision. Evans was the top 205-pound fighter at Jackson's MMA, widely considered the top training camp in MMA. He had lost the UFC light-heavyweight title in his previous fight and was on a quest to regain his perch as the top fighter in the sport. It was at that point he was approached by Coach Greg Jackson with a proposition: An elite light-heavyweight prospect by the name of Jon Jones wanted to join the team and Jackson sought out Evans' blessing.

Rashad Evans is the Ultimate Fighting Championship's light-heavyweight champion -- and that alone is an impressive accomplishment. The division is the UFC's deepest in talent, counting "Rampage" Jackson, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva and Forrest Griffin, among others. Evans, 29, is unbeaten, a former winner of the UFC's reality series, "The Ultimate Fighter," and he claims a stirring knockout of Liddell and TKO beat-down of the tough Griffin in December to take the belt.

Hollywood will have its effect on Quinton "Rampage" Jackson next month when he appears in "The A-Team," but he had no silver-screen performance Saturday night in losing to rival Rashad Evans. Evans (15-1-1) won a unanimous decision in the clash of former Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight champions at MGM Grand Garden Arena, using a big first-round blow and a two-takedown rally from third-round trouble to claim a 30-27 decision on two scorecards and a 29-28 edge on the other.

Jon Jones, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's youngest-ever champion, will defend his light-heavyweight belt for the third time Saturday in Atlanta against his former training partner and ex-UFC champion Rashad Evans. Evans is playing head games, boasting he learned the secrets to defeat the effectively unbeaten Jones (whose only loss is a disqualification for using excessive elbows on an opponent's head) while training against Jones, 24, in Albuquerque. The condescending vibe from Evans could well be a desperate measure by the talented striker given Jones' gifts as a wrestler and improviser capable of producing the widest array of mixed martial arts moves.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson makes a good point. "There's not a lot of people doing A-level movies and putting their life on the line in their other job," he says. "I don't know when the last time an actor was seen laying his life on the line." "Rampage" has undoubtedly brought the Ultimate Fighting Championship a wealth of drama, producing a light-heavyweight title belt, a car crash after a high-speed chase through Newport Beach, a reality television role, a "resignation" from fighting that he submitted via his blog, and now Saturday night's comeback at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena against former champion Rashad Evans.

UFC 170 takes place Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is headlined by a women's bantamweight title fight between champion Ronda Rousey and challenger Sara McMann. The marketing of the fight has focused on their Olympic backgrounds, as Rousey is an Olympic bronze medalist in judo and McMann an Olympic silver medalist in wrestling. McMann's strong wrestling background will present a different challenge for Rousey. In the semi-main event, undefeated Daniel Cormier will compete for the first time at light heavyweight as he looks to quickly move into the title picture in that division.

The U.S. will meet regional rival Mexico on April 2 in Glendale, Ariz., in the Americans' final tuneup before World Cup training camp in May. The U.S. and Mexican federations have been in negotiations to schedule the game for weeks, working through obstacles posed by domestic soccer league matches in both countries as well as TV rights. And the match figures to be important for coaches in both countries in terms of helping them select rosters for this summer's tournament in Brazil.

LAS VEGAS - Ronda Rousey at times was deeply embroiled in combat Saturday night against her hated rival Miesha Tate, but the discomfort did not rise to the level of being hurt. “I was obviously not hurt or they wouldn't be putting me in another fight so quickly,” Rousey said late Saturday at the MGM Grand. After Rousey (8-0) withstood a gritty effort by Tate that concluded with Rousey winning again by armbar, this time in the third round instead of the first as in last year's initial meeting, UFC President Dana White announced that Rousey would defend her Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight title Feb. 22. Rousey will fight Maryland's Sara McMann (7-0)

Lakers fan Lee Searing waited until he thought he had a real nice horse, and it happened to coincide with an injury to his favorite player, Kobe Bryant, so he named his 2-year-old colt, Kobe's Back. And what a debut for the son of Flatter on Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park. Running in the $100,000 Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes, Kobe's Back started slowly out of the gate in the 5 1/2-furlong race and was last in a field of nine. But he came charging in the stretch under jockey Rafael Bejarano and won by 3 1/4 lengths over Willie B Awesome.
