Now we know why Paul Hackett agreed to this game, why he willingly took his team across the country to play a no-nonsense opponent such as Penn State in what amounts to its metropolitan home. It's much more peaceful in the Jersey swamplands, far away from USC fans who want to turn up the heat on Hackett and hold him accountable for all those second-half collapses last year. That's fluff stuff compared to the questions swirling around Penn State Coach Joe Paterno.

A Penn State student suspended for his role in a melee thinks it's unfair that Nittany Lions quarterback Rashard Casey hasn't been disciplined by the school after being charged in the beating of an off-duty police officer. "It's a double standard," senior Michael Byrne said. "It's just because Casey brings in millions of dollars. This whole school is about money. It's ridiculous."

Penn State Coach Joe Paterno plans to play quarterback Rashard Casey, the senior charged with assaulting an off-duty police officer earlier this year. "I'm gonna play Rashard Casey until something convinces me I shouldn't," Paterno said during the annual Big Ten Conference Kickoff Luncheon. Penn State plays USC on Aug. 27 in East Rutherford, N.J., in the Kickoff Classic.

USC rose to No. 12 in the Associated Press rankings after Sunday's victory in the Kickoff Classic at East Rutherford, N.J. But are the Trojans as good as the 29-5 score suggests? Or is Penn State, which fell out of the top 25 for the first time since the end of the 1992 season, that bad? With most of his team playing solidly, but his offense unable to establish a passing attack, Coach Paul Hackett wasn't ready to render a judgment.

Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke sat out practice for the second day in a row because of a sore left ankle. Weinke, who injured the ankle in a 59-7 victory over Maryland on Sept. 28, was expected to practice today when the sixth-ranked Seminoles plan a two-hour practice to prepare for Saturday's game at North Carolina State. Backup quarterback Marcus Outzen has been taking snaps during practice in case Weinke is unable to play.

Rashard Casey zigged and zagged his way up the field, bobbing and weaving through the defense and even throwing in two 360-degree turns for good measure. By the time he was finished, his Penn State teammates were amazed and Illinois was dazed and confused. "He just makes big plays," Penn State fullback Mike Cerimele said. "He made two of them today and turned the momentum." Did he ever.

After losing a 22-point fourth-quarter lead, Iowa settled down during an overtime that must have felt oddly familiar. C.J. Jones' six-yard touchdown reception in the overtime held up for the Hawkeyes (4-1), who upset the No. 12 Nittany Lions, 42-35, Saturday in a Big Ten opener. Penn State (3-1) had a chance to force a second overtime, but Zack Mills' fourth-down pass fell incomplete to give the Hawkeyes their third win in row over the Nittany Lions.

Penn State quarterback Rashard Casey was cleared of a charge he beat an off-duty police officer unconscious outside a New Jersey bar. Casey and Desmond Miller were charged in May with aggravated assault on Patrick Fitzsimmons as the officer left a bar in Hoboken, N.J. Ed DeFazio, deputy first assistant prosecutor for Hudson County, N.J., said the grand jury did not find probable cause to return an indictment against Casey, but returned an assault charge against Miller.

The lambs are all in the fold, and some college football staffs were throwing parties Wednesday night. "You work hard, you play hard," said Bob Toledo, UCLA's coach. "And we worked hard." The Bruin staff, which still has one opening, has been scrambling to recruit since Toledo took over for Terry Donahue, who resigned in December.
