Lexus has announced that its family of crossovers and SUVs will grow by one more with the debut of the all-new NX now slated for April. Toyota's luxury division will unveil this compact crossover at the Beijing Auto Show. The production NX will be loosely based on Toyota's RAV4, and its style will lightly resemble the much more wild LF-NX concept that Lexus has been teasing at auto shows for the last six months. “Customers who liked the LF-NX will be happy to know the production version, NX, derived from the concept will be revealed at the 2014 Beijing International Auto Show next month,” the automaker said in a statement.

Toyota said the electric version of its RAV4 sport utility vehicle goes on sale the last week of this month at a price close to $50,000 before government incentives designed to speed the adoption of alternative fuel cars. The SUV, which has an Environmental Protection Agency rated range of 103 miles on one charge -- roughly 20 to 30 miles more than those of the other electric vehicles it competes against -- is a collaboration with Tesla Motors, the luxury electric car maker based in Palo Alto.

In what is essentially a do-over for the giant automaker, Toyota is again recalling nearly 780,000 RAV4 sport-utilities and Lexus HS250h hybrids to fix a suspension problem. Toyota first recalled the 2006 through 2011 RAV4s and 2010 Lexus HS250hs last year but found that some of the dealers did not make the repair correctly. It also has come up with a new fix for the problem, said Cindy Knight, a spokeswoman at the automaker. The issue involves the rear suspension arm. If nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened during service, the arm, also called the rear tire rod, might develop unwanted movement and rust.

Try as it might, Toyota Motor Corp. can't seem to put its safety woes behind it. Two weeks ago, the Japanese automaker trumpeted the results of a NASA study that cleared its vehicles of having electronic defects that could cause sudden acceleration. But any hope that its biggest safety crisis was finally over dissolved Thursday, as Toyota announced that it would recall 2.17 million additional vehicles to correct mechanical defects that could cause them to accelerate out of control.

The dominance of Japanese automakers in Consumer Reports' annual auto reliability ratings is starting to fade, with two European automakers and one U.S. brand securing places in the top 10 of the 2013 rankings. Lexus - the luxury division of Toyota - scored the top spot this year, followed by Toyota and Acura. Audi - the luxury division of Volkswagen - came in fourth, followed by Mazda, Infiniti, Volvo, Honda and then the sole U.S. brand, the GMC division of General Motors. Subaru was 10th.  But Consumer Reports didn't have all good news for Toyota.

Consumer Reports dumped some its favorite vehicles -- Toyota's Camry, RAV4 and Prius V -- from its list of recommended cars Monday because the vehicles scored poorly in an insurance industry crash test. The influential magazine said it looked at the results of what is known as the small overlap crash test in making the decision to revoke its endorsement for the vehicles. The Camry is the bestselling passenger car in the United States, and the RAV4 is one of the most popular compact sport utilities.

Tesla, the electric car manufacturer, has begun planning for a small sport utility vehicle that will be called Model X and enter the market in 2014, the Palo Alto company said. Although the vehicle will be the size of a small SUV, Tesla said it would offer a much larger interior because the electric drive train and components will take up less space than a conventional gasoline engine and transmission. Tesla also is working with Toyota to develop an electric version of the RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle.

It's all crossovers these days. From the polo grounds of Malibu to the campgrounds of Maine, nearly a fifth of all vehicles sold in the U.S. last year resided somewhere in this netherworld between a car and an SUV. So the stakes were high for Toyota's overdue redesign of the RAV4, a pioneer of the segment in the mid-1990s that had grown stale in comparison with competitors. Often resembling small sport utility vehicles, crossovers are truck-like vehicles built on front-drive car platforms.

The all-new 2013 RAV4 just rolled through The Times' Test Garage, so here's a quick look at the latest crossover from Toyota. Watch this space for a full review from Highway 1 in the coming weeks. This is the fourth generation of the RAV4, a vehicle that competes with the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape. The biggest change from the earlier RAV4 is the redesigned interior and exterior. The new look has more sharp angles than before, and the tailgate now swings up rather than from the side.
