Matt Kemp is expected to make his long-awaited return from the disabled list Friday, which also happens to be the day of the Dodgers' home opener. The timing is entirely coincidental. But from Kemp's perspective, it's absolutely perfect. "Opening day at Dodger Stadium is always a sight to see," Kemp said. "It's always sold out, there's always some type of excitement, 56,000 screaming Dodger fans, man. What a better way to come back than to come back for the home opener?" Kemp can't wait.

If the rink set up at Dodger Stadium wasn't their childhood field of dreams, it was surrounded by attractions the Kings and Ducks never saw in Saskatchewan or Finland: palm trees, a beach volleyball court, and a rich baseball history. Wearing eyeblack on their cheeks and smiles on their faces, the teams took to the great outdoors Friday to practice for Saturday's Stadium Series game. The Kings skated at 4 p.m., when the temperature was about 67 degrees, and said the ice was mushy in a few spots but not much different from what they normally find indoors.

Authorities found eight bones believed to belong to Mitrice Richardson on Sunday while combing the rugged Malibu Canyon ravine where the missing 24-year-old's remains were found in August, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The bones, some of which are believed to be fragments of Richardson's ribs, fingers and wrist, were found six months after the bulk of her remains were removed by the Sheriff's Department. Richardson's family, which has long criticized the department's handling of the case, hopes the discovery will spur authorities to exhume Richardson's body and conduct further testing that could determine how the young woman died after she was released from the sheriff's Malibu station in September 2009.

The body of a dead motorist discovered recently when a second driver plunged over the same roadside cliff but survived may be that of an 88-year-old former liquor store owner and West Los Angeles resident. Officials have not formally identified the deceased motorist, whose decaying remains were discovered behind the wheel of a battered Toyota Camry in a deep ravine in the Angeles National Forest. However, the daughter of Melvin Gelfand, who has been missing for two weeks, said Saturday that she is certain the unknown motorist is her father.

As David Welch penned notes to his family during his dying moments to tell them he loved them, the city he left was making a valiant effort to find him. Welch, 54, drove away from his home in Manhattan, Kan., on Sept. 2 without telling anyone where he was going or when he'd be back, according to Riley County police spokesman Matthew Droge. Welch was found dead Oct. 18 at the bottom of a Utah ravine, nearly 900 miles from home.  The letters were found with him.  During the six-week search, the city rallied behind his wife, Kelly Welch, a professor at Kansas State University, spreading the word about her husband and raising money to help find him. It's called a Ravine, but on this night it was an ocean, thousands of flapping blue towels washing over the visiting Southerners in giant roaring waves of Dodger. Hanley Ramirez blasting, Carl Crawford tumbling, Chris Capuano dealing, Yasiel Puiging, the old house alive and roaring, run after run after run. "Sends chills up your body," said A.J. Ellis. "Freaking constant pressure all night," said J.P. Howell. Postseason baseball returned to Dodger Stadium for the first time in four years Sunday, and the ensuing mixture of quaint tradition and relentless play resulted in four hours of joyful swagger that could be defined in a single declaration Welcome home.

A search-and-rescue team found the body of a missing Ojai woman at the bottom of a steep ravine north of Ojai on Monday afternoon, close to her mangled black Jeep, authorities said. Coroner's investigator Jim Wingate identified the woman as Amy Ellington, a 31-year-old mother who was reported missing Saturday by family members. Wingate said she apparently died in a single-vehicle accident. Ellington left her Ojai home the day before to drive to a relative's home in Pleasanton.

The first thing to go was the pitcher's mound, which was shrouded in black cloth before being jackhammered into fine dust. Then came the infield, with the grounds crew digging deep into the dirt to create trenches running from foul line to foul line, and filling them in with sod and covering it with grass. By early Friday morning the transformation was complete and the field at Dodger Stadium, among the most handsome and stately in baseball, had become a soccer pitch. In its 51-year history, Dodger Stadium has welcomed the Beatles and the Harlem Globetrotters.

The improbable dream is now even more unlikely. The romantic idea of an NFL stadium at Chavez Ravine, one that overlooks downtown Los Angeles, was already a long shot. News that Frank McCourt is in position to demand some involvement only increases the degree of difficulty. The Los Angeles Times obtained documents Wednesday that show the unpopular former Dodgers owner has the option to buy back land if another sports facility - let's say an NFL football stadium - is built on Dodger Stadium property.
