Ray Carrasco spent much of Friday morning reliving the past with one of his playing partners in the Toshiba Senior Classic at Newport Beach Country Club. Carrasco, a touring professional who now represents Strawberry Farms after years of teaching in Laguna Hills and Irvine, played with Gary McCord and David Lundstrom in the first round. McCord and Carrasco have a special connection. The two played in the same Little League at Elks Park in Garden Grove.

Ray Carrasco and Alan Tapie went to Europe together last summer. Played some golf. Made some money. They're hoping to travel around the United States next year. Play a lot of golf. Make a whole lot of money. A year ago, they were slogging through gale-force gusts and freezing rain blowing in off the English Channel during the European PGA's senior qualifying school and earning two of the 10 spots on the tour. One hundred sixty-seven others didn't.

Ray Carrasco was trying his best to deal with the freezing rain blowing in off the English Channel in gale-force gusts, the huge pools of standing water on the fairways and the groundskeepers frantically squeegeeing the greens. But having his caddie walking around smoking a cigarette directly in his line as he prepared to putt was a bit much.

Golf Ray Carrasco of Irvine shot seven-over 79 in the third round of the Senior PGA Tour qualifying tournament in Tucson and withdrew because he aggravated a shoulder injury during the round. He was 19 strokes behind leader Mark Hayes. Miscellany Gustavo Tapia, a lightweight from Santa Ana, won a unanimous decision in the eight-round main event before 1,385 at the Irvine Marriott. Tapia (8-9-2) defeated Jose Reynoso (8-8-2) of Mexico.

Tom McGinnis of Orlando, Fla., Kikuo Arai of Rancho Palos Verdes and Paul Parajeckas of Woburn, Mass., earned spots in the Toshiba Senior Classic through a qualifier Monday at Strawberry Farms in Irvine. McGinnis shot five-under-par 67 to win the qualifier. Arai and Parajeckas each shot 68. Ray Carrasco of Irvine is one of three players who shot 69 and will play today for the final spot. Ted Goin of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
