A Santa Monica start-up wants to take the financial pain out of shaving. Dollar Shave Club is a new membership-only website that promises to “shave time, shave money” by sending customers a shipment of razor blades automatically every month. The company estimates that it will save members as much as $292 per year on shaving. “For a very long time people have been flummoxed by the price of brand-name razors, so they hang on to their blades for longer than they should and milk their blades,” company co-founder and Chief Executive Michael Dubin said.

American men are experiencing a facial hair free-for-all, embracing the unshaven glory of hipsters and Hollywood, and it's cutting into Procter & Gamble Co.'s bottom line. The owner of razor giant Gillette said it is "seeing a slight decline in wet shaving incidence in the U.S. right now driven by fashion," even as global sales in its grooming sector rose 3% during the quarter that ended Dec. 31, the company said Friday. Movember, the annual charity event in which participants raise awareness of prostate cancer by growing mustaches, exacerbated the national sales slide, according to P&G Chief Financial Officer Jon R. Moeller.

Hugh Jackman was accosted by a razor-toting Bakersfield woman Saturday morning at a New York City gym. The woman, 47-year-old Katherine Thurston, reportedly ran into Jackman outside his gym and said, "We're going to get married, right?" before making her way inside, shouting that she loved him and taking an electric razor out of a bag, according to the New York Post . After losing hold of the razor and being told to leave, she fled and was arrested several blocks away. She was then charged with stalking, police told CNN . The razor reportedly fell out of her hands after a trainer from the gym stepped between Thurston and Jackman.

Gillette is moving into the below-the-neck manscape landscape in a big way with its new Body Razor, which it is touting as "the first razor built for the terrain of a man's body. "  This news came to our attention in the form of a package, delivered to our office, that included a smooth-chested, swim-trunks-wearing Ken doll to which one of these new Body Razors has been securely twister-tied. Once we got past the bizarre presentation to focus on the razor itself, it seemed vaguely familiar -- as if we'd seen the distinctive handle shape and rounded three-blade head somewhere before.

Menfolk around the world are growing out their facial hair this month to raise awareness for prostate cancer efforts - a hirsute affair known as Movember . This is fantastic news for men's health advocates, some of whom participate in a similar effort dubbed No Shave November, but notably less awesome for companies such as razor makers and barbershops that deal in scruff removal. During the month, such businesses have the tricky task of marketing products and services that much of their target audience has sworn not to use. Gillette is facing the month full on, launching the eMO'ge ncy Styler Tour to offer free mustache fine-tuning in select cities.

Robin Williams gets naked in "World's Greatest Dad." Really, really naked. "I shaved because if you don't, it's, like, animal-rights issues," says the heretofore hirsute, Oscar-winning superstar. "I did a nude scene in 'Fisher King'; it was Central Park, I was a homeless guy, so I was covered in dirt and really hairy, and it was like, 'Is that Bigfoot? What happened?' "With this, I said to [writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait], 'I think for this scene, I should take everything off because at this point he's literally shedding everything.

Many high-quality electric shavers adapt to different electrical currents for charging during international travel, but they usually require adapters for different-shaped wall outlets. The diminutive new ShaveTech shaver doesn't need any of that rigmarole because it charges with a standard USB port. The shaver, which is about the size of a cellphone, has a flip-open USB plug so you can charge it anywhere using your computer (although the computer itself may need an adapter). Many hotel rooms contain desks with built-in USB ports, and of course some have ports for U.S. appliances, though wattage is usually restricted.

The treatment received by Tyler Palmer ("Boy Transferred in Razor Incident," Dec. 15) is the grossest form of child abuse that any innocent child could suffer. What has happened to us as Americans? Are we so bent on revenge now that we've decided 5-year-olds are equivalent to adults? Even in churches, 5-year-olds are not considered to have reached the "age of reason." I am sick that mature adults can treat a little child with such malice and vindictiveness. And these are "educators?"

Can you help before Kaplan arrives at the cutting edge of despair, or will he foam at the mouth because he's unable to get a close shave? Bobbi Richardson of Thousand Oaks has been running around in circles in her search for self-sticking carpet squares (about 12x12 inches) that used to be popular but seem to have disappeared.

The gig: Michael Dubin, 35, is chief executive and co-founder of Dollar Shave Club, a subscription service that delivers razors and laughs. When Dubin released a YouTube video in March 2012 introducing his company, where members can get razors starting at $1 a month (plus $2 in shipping) delivered to their door, he had no idea the replenishable razor blades were going to be such a big hit. The goofy video went viral, orders poured in (12,000 in the first two days) and the company's website, DollarShaveClub, crashed in the first hour.

This story starts at a point in time that most observers predicted it would end. The year was 2002. The Internet party was long over. Pets.com and other high-flying digital darlings were defunct. It was the dark days for the few survivors of the dot-com bubble, and Razorfish was barely hanging on. The brash online ad agency that had come to symbolize the arrogance and frivolity of the era had slashed its staff from 1,800 employees to just 230. The company was sold for $8.2 million - a minuscule fraction of its $4.2-billion market value just two years before.

Will guys go online-only to shave a few bucks off the cost of the morning shave? Harry's is banking on it. The Harry's website , which went live on March 14, offers a simple lineup: two styles of razor handle, exactly one four-blade cartridge option and precisely one kind of shaving cream. The sales pitch is just as straightforward: "Great Shave. Fair Price. " And that's not a stretch. Depending on which razor handle you choose, a starter kit that includes a handle, three cartridges and a tube of shaving cream sells for $15 or $25. Co-founded by Andy Katz-Mayfield and Warby Parker co-founder Jeff Raider, Harry's is hardly novel in trying to lower the cost of the morning shave by bypassing bricks-and-mortar retail ( Dollar Shave Club is one company that comes to mind)

A model who was slashed in the face with a razor filed suit Friday against the man convicted in the attack, which left her disfigured. The lawyer for Marla Hanson asked the court to proceed as if the amount were $500,000, although the lawsuit against Steven Roth did not specify damages. Hanson, 25, also sued Steven Bowman and Darren Norman, the men Roth allegedly hired to carry out the attack, and asked the court to freeze the assets of all three.

Bruce Springsteen has moved away from the blue-collar badlands, but the music of his Pittsburgh-based pal Grushecky is still all cigarettes and steel. With the Boss himself on hand as producer and sometimes guest performer, the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" aura is inescapable, though Grushecky's limited writing and gravel-gargle voice rarely transcend journeyman status. New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).

Jail couldn't keep Israel Keyes out of trouble, not even with himself. The prolific serial killer had already been caught and jailed by authorities months ago for his final butchery -- the kidnapping and slaying of 18-year-old Anchorage barista Samantha Koenig, one of the eight people he'd alluded to killing over years of attacks across the country. But a new report released this week by the Alaska Department of Corrections detailed the extent to which the 34-year-old construction worker continued to cause trouble with his captors even as he cooperated with investigators working to discover whom he'd killed.
