Holtzman purports to present the real agenda of the pro-life movement. In reality, she only presents one extreme point of view from the perspective of the other extreme. Specifically, she says that pro-lifers are out to ensure that sex occurs "only for the purpose of making babies." While there are groups such as Operation Rescue and the Catholic Church that hold to that position, the majority of pro-lifers do not fall into this category. In fact, the largest group formed for the specific function of opposing abortion--the National Right to Life Committee, of which I am a member--supports increased use of preventive birth control as opposed to abortion.

Re "How schools cheat boys," Current, Aug. 6 I guess all those young men with whom I shared classrooms in private grammar school, parochial high school and at a UC campus aren't really men because, to the best of my recollection, not one ever referred to an assignment as "crap" right in front of the teacher nor demanded the instructor proffer a rational explanation for each assignment. The "precocious" label is out of place for describing a 15- to 16-year-old young man with a penchant for rudeness.

Take another look, Bill Dwyre, don't let the wool get pulled over your eyes by this Jim Murray guy [Feb. 18]. Sports columnist? What a con! What Jim Murray really has been doing was teaching principles of morality, ethics and values. As well as philosophy, history and literature. OK, so he has a deft hand with wit and humor. Sure, he wrote about sports and athletes, but that's in addition. Let me tell you what Jim Murray really is. He is a master and a sage--disguised as a columnist.

Conservatives have been arguing for years that the religious right is simply misunderstood. These vilified godly folks don't want to impose their beliefs on anybody else, we're told. They simply want to defend their traditional beliefs and practices against the aggressive impositions of a secular culture. Therefore any suggestion to the contrary is liberal hysteria or, worse, discrimination against "people of faith." So how do conservatives explain what's been going on at the Air Force Academy?

Snortland points out the contradiction of imputing the attributes of one member of a class to another and then she imputes negative attributes to all white males. Isn't that a non sequitur too? She writes, "What a drag it must be to be an African-American and be expected to explain all other African-Americans." Ms. Snortland, it's a drag to be a white male and be blamed for racism, sexism, militarism, pollution, classism, depletion of the ozone and death and destruction the world over.

Well, here come the bleeding hearts again. Railing against closing our city parks in an effort to reduce flagrant, nighttime drug transactions, activists like park feeder Bill Myers, former city attorney Bob Myers, '60s throwback Jerry Rubin and council members Abdo and Vazquez tell us it is all a conspiracy to drive the homeless from Santa Monica. They ignore the rights of residents to take logical and practical action to protect themselves from property crimes, violence and filth that cling to drug traffickers like molasses.

Re "Vandals Harass Pet Shelter Official," Oct. 4: How appalling that so-called animal lovers would stoop to such vandalism, especially against an agency that has come a long way since the early '90s, when it pursued very disgusting and harmful policies. It is my understanding that the current head of the department has not only adopted pound animals himself but has raised the adoption rate significantly, with an equally significant drop in euthanasia. Then why are these "humaniacs" so hellbent on attacking a department that is trying hard to reform its ways and turn pounds back into shelters?

Re "House OKs English-Only Legislation," Aug. 2: So we need to declare English as the official language of the United States as a means of encouraging immigrants to learn English? Immigrants already know this. That is why the adult immigrants I have taught came to English class for three hours, at least twice a week, after working 10 to 12 hours a day. They know that the more English they learn, the greater the job opportunities. That is why the parents of immigrant children in my classes push their kids to excel in school.

Within an article that was written about the Education Alliance ("Conservatives Take Best Shot at School Boards," Oct. 30) I was mentioned, giving the apparentness that I was part of an "extremist group" when in fact I don't know anyone else supported by the Education Alliance and their respective views. My first disagreement with your newspaper stems from this attitude: Somebody else said it, a staff writer wrote it, but they are not responsible for what they wrote. My second disagreement is an attempt to group me and the Education Alliance by association to a very general statement: "Their whole mission and purpose is anti-public education."

The Mouse has roared. The Anaheim City Council approved an agreement that gives the Walt Disney Co. control over taxpayer-owned Anaheim Stadium, as well as neutering the city's Sportstown plans. As a lifelong Angel fan, I'm glad to be rid of the inept Autry regime. But as someone who once worked in the Anaheim city manager's office, I know that Disney and the Angels are not the "white hats" portrayed in the popular press.
