English soccer giant Manchester United will meet the Galaxy in a July 23 friendly at the Rose Bowl. The match will be the first in the team's summer tour of the United States, and it will also mark the first time the team will wear its Chevrolet-branded kits. General Motors paid a record $560 million over seven years to place the Chevy name and bow-tie logo on the team's uniform. United, which has won 13 of 21 English titles decided during the Premier League era, will be in the U.S. to compete in the International Champions Cup, a tournament that debuted last year and included two games at Dodger Stadium.

Cristiano Ronaldo cried when he accepted the Ballon d'Or, soccer's most prestigious individual prize, earlier this week. But now it's the athletic training staff with his club team, Real Madrid, that is feeling a bit overwhelmed. That's because Ronaldo said he'll soon make good on a promise to buy each of the five trainers a new car of their choice. Ronaldo unseated Lionel Messi, a four-time winner, as FIFA's player of the year largely because Messi was sidelined during part of 2013 because of an injury.

Turns out Lionel Messi is human after all. Or at least his left hamstring is, which is why the four-time FIFA player of the year will probably be out until January after the hamstring gave way during first half of Barcelona's La Liga win over Real Betis on Sunday. That means Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his fourth hat trick of the season Saturday against Real Sociedad, will probably supplant Messi -- at least temporarily -- as the world's best player and should pick up the FIFA Ballon d'Or in January.

Real Madrid added to its star power Sunday by completing what is reported to be a world-record transfer with the Tottenham Hotspurs for Gareth Bale. The Welsh winger will be introduced in Madrid on Monday to much fanfare, with the $132-million transfer fee eclipsing the more than $120 million Real Madrid reportedly paid Manchester United for the rights to Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. In a statement on the Tottenham website, Bale said he had reservations about making a move but admitted it would be a "dream come true" to join Real Madrid.

Several players for Real Madrid strolled onto the Dodger Stadium grass for pregame warmups Saturday and began taking pictures. The players turned in slow circles, snapping shots of the grandstands above them and the hillsides beyond the outfield. Real Madrid might be among the world's most famous sports teams, but this was a historic day, the first time soccer was played at the iconic 51-year-old ballpark in Chavez Ravine. With goals by Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil, the Spanish team then defeated Everton of England, 2-1, in a semifinal match of the Guinness International Champions Cup. The ICC is a tournament featuring the Galaxy of Major League Soccer and seven international teams that's being held mostly in U.S. cities.

A red card to winger Nani in the 56th minute of Tuesday's Champions League match against Real Madrid appears to have been a game changer for Manchester United. United held a 1-0 lead when Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir gave a red card to the winger, who had stretched his leg trying to control the ball but caught Madrid's Alvaro Arbeloa in the chest with the studs of his right shoe. Madrid went on to score two quick goals for a 2-1 victory and advanced to the quarterfinals, 3-2, on aggregate.

Clint Dempsey is in Seattle and Gareth Bale could be headed to Madrid. Neymar has gone from Brazil to Barcelona, Mario Goetze went from Dortmund to Munich and while Cristiano Ronaldo was at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, no one seemed sure where he was headed from there. After two relatively quiet summers, international soccer's summer transfer period has been especially noisy this year with more than 400 top players changing teams in the last seven weeks, including Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao, who jumped to AC Monaco, and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, who joined Ligue 1 champion Paris Saint-Germain.
