Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando spoiled the night for a sold-out crowd of 25,364 at StubHub Center on Saturday night, blocking a Robbie Keane penalty kick in the 92nd minute to maintain a 1-0 lead that handed the Galaxy a loss in its season opener. Although Real Salt Lake walked off with the 1-0 victory, the conversation of the game will center on questionable calls made by replacement referees who were calling the game after the league's officiating union could not settle a labor dispute before the start of the season.

The Galaxy added some much-needed depth to its strike force this off-season the signing of two foreign players, veteran Canadian Rob Friend and young Brazilian Samuel. But the team, which opened their 2014 MLS regular season against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, might get a boost on offense from a more local source: Gyasi Zardes. Zardes was one of the most highly touted prospects in Galaxy history when he was signed in December 2012. In the last two years of his college career at Cal State Bakersfield, Zardes scored 33 goals in 37 games, making him one of the most sought-after college strikers heading into the 2013 MLS draft.

The Galaxy opens its season Saturday night facing the rival that knocked them out of the playoffs last year: Real Salt Lake. But the Galaxy will field a markedly different team at the StubHub Center after bolstering its ranks with several experienced players during the off-season. The moves were to correct the team's uneven play in 2013. "If there was a weakness last year, it's that we were inconsistent," said Coach Bruce Arena, who last month signed a multiyear contract extension.

The Galaxy said Monday it plans to play FC Shirak, the reigning champion in the Armenian Premier League, in a preseason game at StubHub Center on Feb. 8. This would be the first meeting between the two clubs and the first time that the Galaxy has hosted a team from the Armenian Premier League, the Galaxy said. FC Shirak is based in Gyumri, in northwest Armenia, and the club is in second place through the first half of the 2013-14 Premier League season there.  The Armenian club is led by Ivorian midfielder Serge Deble, who is tied for the league lead in goals with nine, the Galaxy said.

Major League Soccer has been on a bit of a roll lately. Over the last six months the league has added two teams, topped 6 million in total attendance for the second consecutive season and, according to Forbes, seen the average value of its franchises rise 175% from 2008. Financially, MLS has never been stronger - which is why a half-dozen other cities, from Miami to San Diego, are begging to join. That's the good news. Here's the bad: An unnecessarily drawn-out postseason schedule, flagging TV ratings and a final featuring the two smallest cities in the league are robbing MLS of much of that momentum, putting a damper on what had been one of the most compelling seasons in the league's 18-year history.

Major League Soccer released its 2014 regular-season schedule Monday, and it has the Galaxy opening at StubHub Center on March 8 against MLS Cup finalist Real Salt Lake. MLS teams will take a mid-June break during the group stage of the World Cup in Brazil before finishing the regular season in the final week of October. The Galaxy closes out its regular season Oct. 25 at Seattle. The Galaxy won't win the MLS title this year, having been eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Galaxy is chasing history in the Major League Soccer playoffs. No team has won three consecutive MLS titles, a feat the two-time defending champions can take a big step toward claiming Thursday when the Galaxy meets Real Salt Lake in the second game of a two-leg Western Conference semifinal series in Sandy, Utah (TV: ESPN2, 6 p.m.). History, however, can be fickle. For proof the Galaxy need look no further than its goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, whose own date with destiny ended in disappointment just three weeks ago. Penedo's Panamanian national team went to stoppage time in its final World Cup qualifier needing only to protect a 2-1 lead over the U.S. to keep alive its chances of reaching soccer's biggest stage for the first time.
