The Emmys mark the official kickoff of awards show season, but there's the impression that less is at stake when it comes to red carpet fashion, because the audience is not as global as it is for the Oscars and the Golden Globes. So traditionally, the European houses skip it altogether, which can mean a lot of bland fashion on the Emmys red carpet. But not so this year. Chic simplicity is a real trend right now, and nobody does that like American designers, who are getting their moment in the spotlight.

2013 will go down as the year the Grammys red carpet went classy. The biggest fashion stars of the night proved that sometimes it's best to leave a little to the imagination. And in the end, it wasn't boring after all. Exhibit 1: There is nothing sexier than Rihanna in that red-hot gown by fashion insider favorite Azzedine Alaia. At first glance, the cross-front style didn't seem to reveal too much. But upon further inspection, the gossamer-like fabric hinted at everything. With Rihanna's soft, wavy hairstyle and minimal makeup, it was perfection.

One of the best parts of fashion weeks, season after season, is Olivia Palermo. She's not a designer or movie star, but she supplies an endless amount of sartorial eye candy. The reality TV personality attends all the hottest shows in outfits that are fashion forward and heavy on the accessories. This season, Palermo's outfits focused on layering. Traditionally, the European houses don't dress many Emmys attendees, which can mean a lot of bland fashion. But not this year. Chic simplicity is a real trend right now, and American designers are the masters of that anyway. They got their moment in the spotlight Sunday night - and rose to the occasion.

The Academy Awards are the biggest fashion runway on the planet. When Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and other stars step out onto the red carpet Sunday, they will be primed to talk as much about what and who they are wearing as about the films that got them there. But it wasn't always this way. The first Academy Awards, held in 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, was a low-key affair - a small dinner and 15-minute ceremony. There was no red carpet, and no one's dresses were on display since the event was not televised.
