Many moons after the "Rachel" haircut hysteria, much ado is still being made about Jennifer Aniston's hair. We went to Aniston, who has joined the ranks of beauty entrepreneurs as co-owner of Living Proof hair care, to find out how she stays serene and beautiful in the spotlight. On the red carpet, you don't significantly change your beauty look.

Chances are, "The 1994 MTV Video Music Awards" tonight won't look much like last year's show. The previous year's lineup of young grunge acts has been replaced by one featuring the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Aerosmith--rock's elder statesmen who tend to wear custom clothes that are, for the most part, clean and unslept-in.

Fancy a pout like Sophia Loren, Marlene Dietrich or Courtney Love? From ladylike ruby to femme fatale orange-red to renegade bordeaux, the looks of these style icons showed up on the fall fashion runways, albeit in a very modern reprise. Fall's bold new red lip colors come in a range of formulations. Tom Ford's "Crimson Noir" Lip Color is a deeply saturated lipstick, while ILIA Beauty's "Heart Beat" lip gloss, inspired by Joan Jett's band the Runaways, is shiny and sheer. The reds in the new Marc Jacobs Beauty collection come in the form of LoveMarc Lip Gels, gel-based lipsticks, and Lust for Lacquer Lip Vinyls, color-drenched lip glosses.

There was one exceptional performance during the eight trials for the $436,000 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity last Saturday night. Straw Flying Dash, a gelded son of Strawfly Special, won his heat by 2 1/2 lengths while running the 350 yards in 17.38 seconds. It was easily the fastest qualifying time and the best by a 2-year-old at the distance at Los Alamitos. Owned by Micah Leslie and Link Newcomb and trained by Dan Francisco, Straw Flying Dash is now perfect in three starts.

A man wearing red lipstick and a long, curly wig claimed he was carrying a bomb as he held up a restaurant at gunpoint and made off with about $3,000, authorities said Friday. The man was sitting in a booth of the Red Robin Restaurant in the 24000 block of Calabasas Road in Calabasas about 9:50 Thursday morning when he presented the manager with a package that he said was a bomb, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Mary Olson.

Red lipsticks have been bestsellers for decades: Revlon's Fire & Ice, Cherries in the Snow and Love That Red, all shades from the early '50s, are still going strong. Their timeless popularity, in fact, inspires other companies to launch would-be classics each season. This year, Chanel has two new shades--the less-opaque Soft Red, debuting this month, and the recently reformulated sheer Garnet, with a sun protection factor of 8.

New York fashion magazine editors may splash their pages with fuchsia disco makeup applied by the darlings of the avant-garde. But when their royal highnesses head out for a night on the town, they book an appointment with makeup artist Bobbi Brown. Brown's take on fall's color-saturated palette is simple: "If you look great in red lipstick, great. But if you look silly, forget it." Blondes, in her opinion, fall into the latter category--yellow hair plus ruby lips equals color overkill.

As still as a statue, Taylor Swift stood before her 15,000 adoring fans at the Staples Center on Monday night, absorbing the screams of an electrified crowd. Glowsticks and multi-colored LEDs glistened all around. Cameras flashed. She'd already performed "State of Grace," her majestic ode to "the golden age of something good and right and real," and had traversed the catwalk that led from her main stage to a second one in the middle of the arena. She stared straight ahead, Aphrodite in red lipstick and high-waisted shorts.

Deck the halls, plum the pudding, make merry under the mistletoe: The holidays are party season and now's your time to shine. And whether you're headed to the festivities directly from the office or just need to get ready fast, the quickest way to add glamour to your look is by paying attention to lips and eyes. "Lashes and lipstick are really the quickest, easiest way to make the transition from day to evening," says Gina Brooke, Intraceuticals skin care ambassador and former Shu Uemura artistic director, whose celebrity clients have included Anne Hathaway and Madonna.

Red was a distinct note on the fall runways, and plenty of red accessories are turning up in stores this season, adding a punch of color to wardrobe staples. It's a longtime "power" color (remember the power tie? Nancy Reagan red?) and is traditionally believed to be stimulating and energizing. It's a hue associated with anger, sin, sex and virility. (Red-blooded anyone?) Red is especially complementary to all of the camel hues and leopard prints seen in stores at almost every price this season.

When it came to cultivating a signature look for characters, no director was more of a style Svengali than Alfred Hitchcock. His cool, elegant leading ladies were tall glasses of mercury -- gorgeous, fluid and, in many cases, toxic. This fall, the fitted and sophisticated silhouette has replaced the diaphanous shapeless shift, with pencil skirts and knit suits leading the pack. Herewith, a primer on how to emulate the classic style and mannerisms of a Hitchcock darling.

I bought my first chanel lipstick, "red flame," at the duty-free shop on my way back from bLondon three years ago. This is what you do when you turn 30. Now Chanel lipstick is substantial, grown-up stuff, so if you've never taken a life drawing class in Paris, you probably shouldn't risk applying it. But if you have a sure hand, wearing Chanel is the only way you're ever going to look like Grace Kelly or Kim Novak when you meet the ladies for lunch at the Four Seasons.

It's hard to say what's most striking about "Chicago" showgirl Velma Kelly -- the bright red lips, the smoky eyes, the short dresses with sequined strands that seductively dust her behind, or the fact that she shot her husband with no regrets. The combination of elements, however, makes for a stirring beauty, a tantalizing danger that men want to touch and women want to possess.
