? DeMarco Murray rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns in 25 carries, and No. 8 Oklahoma held on to defeat 21st-ranked Texas, 28-20, to take the 105th installment of the Red River Rivalry. For the second consecutive week the Sooners (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) survived a late comeback, as the Longhorns' Aaron Williams fumbled a punt near midfield with 1:02 remaining to end Texas' 13-game conference winning streak. Landry Jones added scoring tosses to Kenny Stills and James Hanna and threw for 236 yards for the Sooners, who had lost this rivalry game four of the previous five years.

He was a future hall of fame coach who won a Bowl Championship Series title years ago at a school that starts with the letter "T. " After a while, though, the football got stale and the fan base revolted. The arc of the coach's work was impressive but the feeling was that it was time for everyone to move on. Change would lead to brighter days and more titles. Sometimes you have to give the people what they want even if they don't know what it is. Last August, Phillip Fulmer was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Rankman was so impressed with Oklahoma's win over Florida State that he bumped the Sooners, everybody else's No. 1 team, up two spots to No. 2. Actually, No. 3 Louisiana State will be the undisputed Creole Kings if Les Miles' Tigers are undefeated on Nov. 5 after wins over West Virginia and Alabama. Four teams bottomed out of the top 25 this week and were topped by Clemson, Georgia Tech, Houston and Illinois. Georgia Tech has not enjoyed a drubbing like 66-24 over Kansas since John Heisman's team clobbered Cumberland, 222-0, in 1916.

They offer a lot of great things at the State Fair of Texas game at the Cotton Bowl, and I've eaten all of them. My favorite is the giant turkey leg, followed by corny dogs, funnel cakes and whatever else they can throw in a deep fryer. In one of the morning shockers, Oklahoma is taking Texas to the Dunk Tank. The score was 36-2 when the first half ended and it wasn't that close. Oklahoma had 17 first downs to Texas' four. If you counted the score from the start of last year's game, a 55-17 Oklahoma win, Texas had been outscored 91-19 in six quarters.

Colt McCoy was a mess. His right thumbnail was ready to fall off, a nagging cold was wearing him down and Oklahoma was confusing him with blitzes he'd never seen. Then, with a chance to put the game away for Texas midway through the fourth quarter, he threw an interception that could've turned into a go-ahead touchdown for the Sooners. McCoy salvaged it all. He made a game-saving tackle on the pickoff return. Then, after his defense got him the ball back, he managed to grind out the final 3:31, sending No. 3 Texas to a 16-13 victory Saturday over a No. 20 Oklahoma team that again lost Heisman winner Sam Bradford.
