"Red Tails" squanders a great subject, reducing the real-life struggles and fierce heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen to rickety cliché. Some of the action's fun. But if something about that statement doesn't sound right, well, there's your chief problem with "Red Tails. " It sets out to ingratiate without provocation or complexity. This much can be said of producer George Lucas' long-gestating project: It avoids the aggravating Hollywood strategy of telling an African American story by way of a mass-marketable white protagonist, a la the Civil War drama "Glory.

For the Oxford-born, Nigeria-raised David Oyelowo, the last few years have been a profoundly deep - and sometimes harrowing - dive into the African American experience. The actor has played a Tuskegee airman in George Lucas' "Red Tails," a U.S. cavalryman in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," and a Southern preacher in "The Help. " But things really got intense when he had to endure abuse at a segregated lunch counter and mobs of Klansmen for his part as a civil rights activist in "Lee Daniels' The Butler.

Although it's been almost four years since Terence Blanchard's last album, it's not as if the trumpeter hasn't kept busy. In addition to the Poncho Sanchez collaboration "Chano y Dizzy," he's remained a first-call film composer (with Spike Lee's "If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise" and George Lucas' "Red Tails" among his latest), and in his spare time wrote an opera, which debuts in St. Louis next month. Though Blanchard has no shortage of outlets, he still sounds overflowing with inspiration.

Michael Hayes wasn't sure what to do when an injured red-tailed hawk dropped in on the Pasadena Senior Center in February. So he winged it. "He'd been in a tree for several days, but one morning I came to work at 7 and saw him standing on the trash can next to the back door," Hayes said Wednesday. "I walked up to him and he didn't move. Then I took a picture of him with a flash, and he still stood there. I knew something was wrong with him. " Hayes, who is maintenance chief at the center, called the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA and was advised that animal control officers would come and take the hawk if someone at the senior center could catch it. That's because most of the injured-bird calls the society receives are false alarms.
