A baseball season that started with Redlands East Valley players having to deal with tabloid-like stories about their star player assaulting their coach is ending with the Wildcats firmly in position to win the Citrus Belt League championship and make a strong bid for the Southern Section Division 2 title. That was demonstrated in convincing fashion Wednesday, when pitcher Griffin Murphy improved to 10-0 and Brad Burcroff hit a three-run home run in the Wildcats' 8-4 victory over host Yucaipa.

At 6 feet 4, 250 pounds, with 4.7 40-yard speed and a relentless drive to pursue ball carriers, Kylie Fitts of Redlands East Valley appears to be the perfect fit to create havoc on defense. "He's such a beast," Coach Kurt Bruich said. As the stakes get higher, Fitts elevates his own performance. "Going out there, with all the fans and all the pressure, I just love the whole atmosphere," he said. The Wildcats are 10-0 and seeded No. 3 in the Inland Division playoffs.

Kurt Bruich, who helped turn around the football program at Cerritos High, has been hired as coach at Redlands East Valley. Bruich was 26-16 in four seasons at Cerritos, which had been 21-71-1 in nine seasons before his arrival. No. 9 La Puente Bishop Amat (10-1) at No. 5 Lakewood (10-1), 7 p.m. Lakewood has been on an extended roll since a one-point loss to Los Angeles Crenshaw in its season opener. Only Long Beach Poly has come within a touchdown of Lakewood, who overwhelmed Newport Harbor, 41-17, in the first round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs. Bishop Amat knows all about close games. Bishop Amat has won two overtime games and pulled out a 28-21 victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei last week when receiver Rio Ruiz scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds left.

The Pac-5 Division has been long considered the strongest in Southern California football. In the five years of CIF state championship bowl games, the Pac-5 champion has been chosen four times to play at the Home Depot Center. This season, the debate is going to be loud and furious about whether the Inland Division champion deserves to be chosen over the Pac-5. There are two bowl games available (Division I and Open Division) among the champions from the City Section and the Pac-5, Inland and Northern divisions.

A look at some of the Southland's top high school football games: No. 2 Corona Centennial (0-0) at No. 13 Temecula Chaparral (0-0) Tonight at 7:30 Chaparral upset Centennial in the 2006 playoffs, then suffered an upsetting 54-point loss to the Huskies last season in an Inland Division semifinal. Now the Pumas will open against Centennial, which wanted to upgrade its nonleague schedule to prepare for its first season of Big VIII League play. A defensive front that Huskies Coach Matt Logan described as "one of the best we've had" will be tested by Chaparral junior Jonathan Diaz, who rushed for 1,221 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore.

Countless times, Ventura St. Bonaventure Coach Todd Therrien has proved to be hardheaded, but Friday night, he literally took it to another level. In the second quarter of his team's 18-7 victory over Redlands East Valley, Therrien said he suffered a concussion when struck out of bounds. "I wanted to stop the momentum, and my own receiver's foot kicked me in the temple," he said. "I got knocked to the ground, and they said I looked like Michael Spinks after Mike Tyson hit him. " If there were an award for coach of the year after the first three football games of the 2012 season, Therrien would be a runaway winner.

Issues, questions, controversies for the 2012 prep football season: Who will be the first coach's wife to file for divorce because of an unprecedented 16-game schedule? I still don't think it was worth it to move up the season one week so players could endure record heat during August practices just to add a week of regional football playoff games in December and subject a select few teams to a potential 17-week season. When the state bowl games are finally completed Dec. 14-15, the celebration scene won't last long.

It was an improbable way to win a Citrus Belt League title and knock off a powerhouse. The starting quarterback was on the bench with a separated shoulder, and the backup had only 50 seconds to try to give his team a chance to win. But senior Mike Stadler came through, completing five of nine passes for 54 yards on the winning touchdown drive, then delivered a pass for a two-point conversion with one second left that gave Redlands East Valley a 41-40 victory over Colton, ranked No.

Southern California is already home to several intense high school rivalries, and a new one will be born Friday night when Redlands plays Redlands East Valley at the University of Redlands. East Valley, a new school with more than 2,100 students, is fielding teams in 21 varsity sports this school year, Athletic Director Rhonda Fouch said. The Wildcats are competing as a free-lance team in football this season and will join the powerful Division I Citrus Belt League in 1998.
