State and city officials are preparing an appeal of the federal government's decision not to declare the city a disaster area or provide financial assistance after the fire that destroyed a large section of the Redondo Beach Pier, according to City Manager Tim Casey. The May 27 fire caused about $7 million in damage to public and private property and destroyed 15 businesses. Damage to the wooden pier was $2.5 million, but city officials estimate that it will cost up to $6 million to replace it.
