Ofa Tulikihihifo scored 16 points Tuesday night to lead Redondo Union to an easy 83-30 victory over Tulare Western in the opening round of the Southern California regional of the girls' state basketball tournament at Redondo Union. Redondo Union (27-5), the Southern Section Division II-AA champion, scored the first 12 points and led, 20-9, at the end of the first quarter. Redondo Union increased the lead to 39-15 by halftime.

Ten days after capturing its first CIF Southern Section Division 1AA title, the Los Angeles Marymount girls volleyball team is on the verge of an even more historic milestone. The Sailors moved to within one victory of their first Division I state crown with a shockingly swift 25-16, 25-18, 25-14 sweep of Redondo Union in the Southern California Regional finals Tuesday night and will look for redemption against Sacramento St. Francis in the state championship match Saturday night at Concordia University.

After losing to Brea Olinda in a Southern Section girls' basketball final last season, Santa Ana Foothill was looking forward to getting another shot at the Ladycats in this year's Division II-AA title game. But Redondo Union ended Foothill's hopes, beating the Knights, 71-53, Tuesday night in a semifinal at Villa Park High. Redondo advances to Saturday's final at the Pyramid and will face the winner of tonight's game between Brea Olinda and Norco.

Helix defeated Redondo Union, 55-52, in the championship game Saturday of the Spartan Classic at Chula Vista High. In the final minutes, Reynell Dukes scored a three-pointer and after being fouled and made one of his two shots giving Helix a 54-52 lead. After a timeout, Brandon Sanders was fouled and scored to put Helix ahead, 55-52. With seconds remaining, after Redondo's Dave Cottey missed his three-point attempt, teammate Mike Boyce rebounded and passed off Ron Grim.

Dijon Thompson scored 25 points as second-seeded Redondo Union High won its first Southern Section boys' basketball title since 1943 with a 60-54 victory over top-seeded Lakewood Mayfair in the II-A championship game Saturday at the Arrowhead Pond. Wendal White had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Redondo (25-5), which took a 16-5 lead. But Mayfair (25-3) stayed in the game behind Stanford-bound Josh Childress, who scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half.

Fourth-seeded Fullerton took the straight-forward approach in its 28-0 victory over Redondo Beach Redondo Union in a Southern Section Division VII second-round playoff game Friday at Redondo Union High. The Indians physically dominated the line of scrimmage all night. Fullerton's defense held Redondo Union to 27 yards offense in the first 3 1/2 quarters, and running back John Wilkie led the offense, rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns in 23 carries.

Ofa Tulikihihifo was considered the best player on the Redondo Union girls' basketball team, so when she tore ligaments in her right knee last June, it was a tremendous loss. Yet, when the Sea Hawks step on the Arco Arena floor against Stockton St. Mary's on Friday, trying to win their first state championship, the flash point of their success can be traced to Tulikihihifo's injury. A team that relied on Tulikihihifo to score and rebound had to learn to fend for itself.

White missed his first seven three-point attempts Friday night against Santa Margarita, but made the one the third-seeded Sea Hawks needed to topple the second-seeded Eagles, 56-53, in a Southern Section Division II-A boys' basketball semifinal at Concordia University in Irvine.

Like everyone else involved with girls' high school golf in Southern California, Jim St. Hilaire is taking a wait-and-see approach to this season. St. Hilaire, however, has more reasons than most. Not only must he contend with a Southern Section rule change that significantly alters the way matches are scored, but St. Hilaire is also a first-year coach taking over at Redondo Union High, considered the top team in the Southland.
