A Compton high school football player is suing a Lawndale referee, claiming that the referee kicked him and called him a racial epithet. Centennial High School football player Vincent Brooks alleges in a civil suit, filed Friday in Compton Superior Court, that referee Ken Smotry punched him in the mouth and called him a racial slur during an October football game between Centennial and Beverly Hills high schools. Smotry was arrested on suspicion of the alleged assault.

Attorneys representing football referee Brad Woolley have filed a lawsuit in L. A. Superior Court against the Antelope Valley Union High School District and a Palmdale High football player who attacked Woolley during a game last season. Woolley sustained minor injuries when Darius Wilson, then 18, knocked him down in the fourth quarter of the Oct. 13 Palmdale-Saugus game at College of the Canyons.
