It's a good thing Cal State Fullerton recruiting coordinator Jim Chaney reached out and touched running back Reggie Yarbrough in July. Had Chaney not made the long-distance call that attracted Yarbrough to the school, Yarbrough would not have made the long-distance touchdown run that broke a third-quarter tie and helped the Titans defeat Sonoma State, 38-24, Saturday.

New Mexico State, which has won only two Big West Conference games in seven seasons, has a good opportunity to increase that total to three today when it plays Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m. in Santa Ana Stadium. The Aggies are 0-7 but, according to Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy, have made considerable progress over last season, when they went 1-10. "They're for real--they really are," Murphy said. "They're bigger and more aggressive up front. They have better skilled people."

Fresno State will start its third-string quarterback, junior Brian Rowe, against Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference game tonight at 7. Redshirt freshman Trent Dilfer started the last three games in place of Mark Barsotti, who suffered a broken leg four weeks ago, but Dilfer has a bone chip in the ring finger on his throwing hand and will play only in an emergency. Fresno State, 8-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play, probably will not need him.

Cal State Fullerton's football team brings a seven-game losing streak to Veterans Stadium today, but Cal State Long Beach Coach George Allen doesn't believe that automatically makes the 49ers the favorite. "We're not strong enough, big enough or proficient enough to think we can beat anybody," Allen said. Long Beach is 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the Big West Conference going into the 1 p.m. game against the Titans (1-7, 0-3).

The Long Beach defense has given up an average of 37.
