News Corp. and TCI in Cable TV Deal: News Corp. and Tele-Communications Inc. plan to acquire a majority interest in Reiss Media Enterprises Inc.--a pay-per-view, programming and distribution company--for an undisclosed sum. Reiss will also become sole owner of the pay-per-view networks Request Television and Request 2, by buying out Group W Satellite Communications' 50% interest. The deal represents News Corp.'s and TCI's first foray into pay-per-view.

The figures are slow coming in, but it appears that the pay-per-view telecast of the Who's special "Tommy" performance at the Universal Amphitheatre last Thursday was not the record-breaker some had hoped for. Early reports from cable operators who carried the event indicate that between 1% and 1.5% of the 12.5 million households with access to the show paid the $19.95 fee to see it, for a take of between $2.5 million and $3.7 million.

The pay-per-view industry will be watching closely when the Who takes the stage at the Universal Amphitheater Aug. 24 to perform the rock opera "Tommy." The reason is simple: If PPV is going to grow, it must find events beyond wrestling and boxing that will attract viewers. PPV executives hope rock concerts will be the next big cash draw. If "Tommy" proves successful, expect a rash of televised mega-rock events.
