The Dalai Lama, spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism, arrived to a tumultuous welcome in this deeply religious nation Friday, then declared that the resurgence of Buddhism here offers hope for freedom in Tibet. The Mongolian people have traditionally believed in Tibetan Buddhism. But the faith was brutally suppressed in a 1930s wave of Stalinist-style terror launched by a Communist regime that took power in 1921.

The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, led Mongolian worshipers in services at an outdoor sports stadium here Saturday, delivering a message of religious faith and of secular hope for a better future. Flanked by about 200 red-robed Mongolian monks, the Dalai Lama, in a dark crimson robe and yellow shawl, spoke to reverent crowds about both traditional Buddhist themes and the economic crisis faced by Mongolia today.
