It's the weekend for rematches. Seven championship football games are rematches either from championship games last season or league matchups this season. It will put pressure on the 12 coaches involved to make adjustments and also on the players not to take teams lightly, especially if they won the first time. In the City Section Division I final, Narbonne-Crenshaw is a rematch of last season's final won by Narbonne. In the Pac-5, St. John Bosco-Mater Dei is a rematch of a league game won by St. John Bosco.

LAS VEGAS - They are asking all the wrong people here to predict the outcome of Saturday night's fight between Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley. Sportswriters? Are you kidding? This analysis demands a bit more depth than arguing the merits of the designated hitter. Too bad Sigmund Freud has departed us. His insights into these two fighters could be both learned and insightful. In the blue corner, from the Philippines, is the congressman from the Sarangani district, Manny Pacquiao, with a record of 55-5-2 and 38 knockouts.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, lots of celebrity chefs are going to be slicing and dicing at The Taste, the L.A. Times' food and wine festival this weekend at Paramount Studios. But do any of them have an edge over the best chefs in the Los Angeles Fire Department? Maybe, but it's close. And if you don't believe me, come join me Sunday at 2:15 when I host a rematch of the firehouse cook-off, with Capt. Mark Curry of Station 29 in Koreatown throwing his best at firefighter Cruz Macias of Station 87 in Granada Hills.

CALGARY, Canada - Two weeks removed from a lopsided beat-down against a team all but out of the playoff running, the Ducks returned to the Saddledome on Tuesday and practiced for more than an hour in anticipation of the rematch. "We practice like we play a lot. I wanted to make sure we practiced hard and were ready for tomorrow," said Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau. On March 12, the Calgary Flames (30-35-7) throttled the Ducks, 7-2, scoring the most goals against Anaheim (46-18-7)

NEW YORK---Sloane Stephens, who upset Serena Williams at the Australian Open earlier this year, seems headed for a rematch. Stephens, seeded 15th at the U.S. Open, dominated fellow American Jamie Hampton and won 6-1, 6-3 over the 23rd-seeded Hampton. Williams had been hampered by a sprained ankle when she lost to Stephens in the Australian Open quarterfinals 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Stephens ended a 20-match Williams winning streak with that victory and the two haven't been chummy since then.

Timothy Bradley doesn't know what Manny Pacquiao is thinking as he continues to wait for the Filipino superstar to announce his next opponent, but he has a simple case to make. "This guy can choose anyone he wants to fight, but I don't know how he can pick anyone other than me," Bradley told The Times Tuesday in a telephone conversation. "I'm the champion. "If he wants his belt back, he has to come through me to get it. He relinquished it to me. Regardless of what everyone might think of how I beat him -- the controversy -- I've got a win on my resume over Manny Pacquiao, and it's going in the history books that way. "If he doesn't want to fight me, that's on him. " Palm Springs' Bradley (29-0)

It will be an all-Foothill League final in the Northern Division championship game next Friday after Valencia and Hart cruised to semifinal victories. Valencia defeated Foothill foe Saugus, 45-8. Connor Wigenroth had five touchdowns in Hart's 42-7 win over West Torrance. Valencia defeated Hart, 24-19, when the two teams met in league play on Nov. 1. But Valencia will be without perhaps its best player, defensive back-receiver Jay Jay Wilson. He was ejected from Friday's win, which means he'll miss the championship game.

In the City Section Division III semifinals on Friday, Bernstein (10-1) gets to play the only team it lost to this season, Sun Valley Poly (8-4), in a rematch at Poly. Poly won, 26-13, back on Sept. 6, a game in which Bernstein defensive players had a difficult time tackling. D.J. Jones, a physical running back, will be one of those Poly players Bernstein must deal with. Bernstein running back Julio Quintero has rushed for 1,371 yards and 13 touchdowns. In the Division II semifinals, South Gate (7-5)

For the third consecutive season, Narbonne and Fairfax will face off in the City Section Division I girls' basketball championship game. In Saturday's semifinals, TyBriann Jones scored 17 points and La'Tecia Smith had 13 points in Narbonne's 52-37 win over Palisades. Kylie Bethel scored 15 points for Palisades. Fairfax, seeded No. 1, knocked off Granada Hills, 44-33. Marguerite Effa scored 16 points. Fairfax has lost each of the last two seasons in the final to the Gauchos, but Coach Judi Edwards seems confident her team can end the drought next Saturday at 6 p.m. at L.A. Southwest College.

Defending champion Serena Williams advanced to the U.S. Open final with a 6-0, 6-3 victory on Friday over Li Na of China, setting up a rematch of last year's championship match against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. The second set was full of clever shot-making by the top-seeded Williams and fifith-seeded Li, the first Chinese player to reach a U.S. Open semifinal. They were willing to play at the net, vary service speeds by up to 20 mph, use lobs and cross-court shots. Unfortunately for Li, she didn't make enough of her shots, and Williams advanced to her 21st Grand Slam singles final.

On a hot Wednesday afternoon in a strip mall near a busy Los Angeles street corner, a congressman was beating up an elderly and defenseless man. It was almost as one-sided as the Manny Pacquiao-Tim Bradley fight that two judges on duty that night failed to see. No police were summoned. No 911 calls made. This was sanctioned assault, also known know as boxing training camp. You knew immediately where you were, from the " pop, pop, pop" of boxing gloves colliding in the ring, and from the moisture forming under your arms.

Timothy Bradley laid out some valid points about why he believes his April 12 rematch against Manny Pacquiao will be even more impressive than their June 2012 fight that Bradley won by a controversial split decision. "He can still punch like hell, but I feel the killer instinct is gone," Bradley said Tuesday in Beverly Hills, where he and Pacquiao launched the promotion of their HBO pay-per-view bout at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The 35-year-old Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs), with more than triple the number of Bradley's knockouts, was asked about that zinger.

So … we meet again. Three of this weekend's four NFL wild-card games are rematches from the regular season, with New Orleans at Philadelphia being the only first-time matchup. The most recent of these meetings came two weeks ago when Indianapolis won at Kansas City, 23-7. The Colts, who play host to the Chiefs on Saturday, took advantage of four turnovers in that game. Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith had a fumble and was picked off twice after tallying just six interceptions in the first 14 games.

If you can't win, you better learn, and the lessons that emerged from the Ducks' loss in San Jose on Sunday are expected to be put into effect in the New Year's Eve rematch at Honda Center. For one, playing physically is more effective than relying on finesse. The Ducks' lone goal in the 3-1 loss came from rugged fourth-line member Patrick Maroon , who was given 12 minutes 25 seconds of ice time and "was hitting everything that was moving," Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said Monday after the team practiced at Honda Center.

Common sense says North Carolina will win tonight's national title game at Ford Field. Common man is pulling for Michigan State. Cold, hard facts say North Carolina hangs its fifth championship flag. Soft, warm and fuzzy wants the banner hung in East Lansing. Clear, independent analysis has declared this game won't be close. Rational thought computed the box score from Dec. 3, when North Carolina came to Detroit for a site-inspection dissection of Michigan State. The final score was 98-63.

Anyone who has even a passing interest in mixed martial arts probably has an opinion on the Anderson Silva-Chris Weidman rematch set for Saturday night at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Can Weidman again knock out Silva, the 38-year-old former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion, who held the title for more than six years? Will Weidman decide this match on the canvas, after making Silva look so uncomfortable there in July? UFC President Dana White has kicked around the debate for quite a while, ever since watching Weidman's knockout punch and scheduling the rematch a week later.
