Remy McCarthy, who coached the Oxnard College men's basketball team for five seasons, has been named interim women's coach at Moorpark, Raider Athletic Director John Keever said Friday. McCarthy replaced Lisa Ziegler, who resigned for personal reasons on Dec. 6 after Moorpark defeated Antelope Valley, 59-33, in a nonconference game. The Raiders were 1-8 this season under Ziegler and 23-42 since she took over the program in 1992.

All coaches, says Remy McCarthy, should be remembered for something special. And himself? "I tell my guys that I want to be remembered as the only coach in America who wears a Jackson Browne T-shirt to practice," McCarthy says. Perhaps someday. But not now. What McCarthy currently is known for is helping save the Oxnard College basketball program.

Followers of Western State Conference men's basketball may be a bit shocked when they glance over the current standings. Few observers expected Ventura and Oxnard to be tied for fourth in the Northern Division with 3-2 records. But following weekend losses, that's exactly where they find themselves entering Wednesday's games. Ventura dropped a 107-101 decision to division-leading L.A. Valley on Saturday night to fall further from its goal of winning the conference title.

Lance Fay of Buena High and Chris Cole of Santa Clara, two of the best basketball players in Ventura County last season, made commitments Thursday to attend Oxnard College next season, Oxnard Coach Remy McCarthy said. Fay, a 6-foot-1 point guard, averaged a region-high 29.2 points a game and was selected The Times' Ventura County player of the year. He also averaged seven assists. Cole, a 6-4 swingman and two-time Southern Section Division IV player of the year, averaged 10.5 points and 7.

Remy McCarthy, the men's basketball coach at Oxnard College for the past five seasons, has resigned from his position. McCarthy announced in a faxed statement Monday that he had "requested and received a change of assignment effective July 1, 1993 to a strictly classroom assignment." McCarthy made the request for "personal reasons." Freshman guard Lance Fay, Oxnard's leading scorer, said McCarthy told the team of his decision Monday. "It caught me off guard," Fay said.

The Ventura College basketball team is breezing by its junior college opponents this season, but are the Pirates good enough to beat a Division I team such as Cal State Northridge? That question was put to several area experts, all of whom agreed that Ventura, even with five Division I prospects, would not have much chance of winning. "A junior college team couldn't beat the worst Division I team," said Remy McCarthy, Oxnard College coach. "CSUN is older, bigger, smarter and good.

Freshman guard Sean Young converted a pair of 3-point shots in overtime to lead Moorpark College to a 78-71 victory over defending tournament champion Rio Hondo in the first round of the 20th Moorpark College/Camarillo Kiwanis basketball tournament Thursday at Moorpark. "Sean was a little hesitant about taking the shots," Moorpark Coach Al Nordquist said. "We are a young team, but our players are learning to play under pressure."

James Williams of Stoneridge Prep scored 12 of his 22 points on dunks to lead the West to a 111-102 victory over the East in the inaugural Small Schools Senior All-Star basketball game Friday night at Taft High. Williams, who averaged 30 points per game and led his team to the Southern Section Division V-A quarterfinals, played only 10 minutes for the Southern Section in the Battle of the Valley All-Star game.

Remy McCarthy of Moorpark College and Mike Miller of L.A. City have been selected junior college men's basketball co-coaches of the year in Southern California. Forward Tellys Knight of Oxnard and guards Felix Lang of Valley and Dan Galvanoni of Moorpark were selected to the all-state team. McCarthy guided the Raiders to a 27-8 record and the semifinals of the state championships. It was Moorpark's first appearance in the state tournament.

Remy McCarthy, an assistant coach for the Moorpark College men's basketball team the past two years, has been named the Raiders' head coach pending approval by the Ventura County Community College District. McCarthy, a Moorpark player in the late 1970s and the Raider women's basketball coach for part of the 1994-95 season, takes over for Del Parker, who resigned after last season. "I'm excited about it," McCarthy said. "I went to school there, I played there and I've coached there before.
