Renée Fleming will return to Los Angeles Opera later this season in a production of André Previn's "A Streetcar Named Desire," which is scheduled to run for three performances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on May 18, 21 and 24, 2014. The production will mark the first time that Fleming has performed in an opera for the company since her 2006 role in "La Traviata. " (She has appeared in recitals for L.A. Opera in the interim.) Fleming, who plays Blanche DuBois in the adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play, first performed in the role in 1998 at San Francisco Opera.

This review has been updated. The sound of two women singing in close harmony can give a special feeling of pleasure and even exhilaration. It is a sound not restricted to French art song, but the French especially cultivated it during the belle époque era, 1880 to World War I. This was the era lovingly mined by soprano Renée Fleming and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in a joint recital Saturday at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The quintessential example would be the "Duo des fleurs" from Delibes' "Lakmé," appropriated as an ad by British Airways for its sense of classy uplift.

Simone Dinnerstein performed an all-Bach piano recital at Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on Monday night. Although she's been just about everywhere else, including on many morning TV shows, and although the CDs of her dreamily ethereal Bach sell like hot cakes, this was her first appearance in our neck of the woods. Maybe that makes sense. She is the daughter of outsider painter Simon Dinnerstein and while she now sports big-bucks management and a Sony Classical contract, her career has been unconventional.
