Rep. Paul D. Ryan was booed at the annual AARP convention Friday after saying that, if elected, their Republican administration would repeal the nation's healthcare law as the best way to save Medicare. Just five minutes into his talk at the gathering of the powerful 50-and-older lobby, Mitt Romney's running mate - the architect of the Republican proposal to change Medicare for the next generation of seniors - was repeatedly interrupted as he criticized President Obama's healthcare law. "The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds," Ryan said as the crowd in New Orleans booed audibly.

A referendum to repeal a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles appears to be headed for the ballot, with pot shop supporters saying Wednesday that they have collected nearly twice the signatures required to force a citywide vote and key City Council members signaling that they won't try to stop it. On Thursday, medical cannabis supporters plan to turn in the names of 50,000 voters who want the referendum included on the March ballot....

Outside a Trader Joe's in Silver Lake, a man in sunglasses and flip-flops called out questions to bag-toting shoppers. "Do you support medical marijuana?" he asked. "Well did you hear what City Hall just did?" An army of signature-gatherers has hit Los Angeles streets in recent weeks in a drive to repeal a recent ban on marijuana dispensaries. If activists can collect the roughly 27,400 names required within the next three weeks, a referendum to overturn the ban would go before voters in March.

An announcement from the office of the deputy assistant secretary of Defense said that wearing their uniforms is permitted "provided service members participate in their personal capacity and ensure the adherence to military service standards of appearance and wear of the military uniform. " The decision marks the first time that gay personnel will be allowed to wear their uniforms in a gay parade.

Kicking off a two-day swing through Virginia on Friday, President Obama ribbed the Republican-led House of Representativesfor its repeated attempts to repeal his healthcare law. “I notice the House of Representatives, the Republicans in the House of Representatives, they voted to repeal it again,” a mocking Obama told a crowd gathered in Green Run High School in Virginia Beach. “That was the 33rd time they've done that. Thirty-three votes to repeal the healthcare bill. All it would take is one vote to make sure that all of you don't see your taxes go up next year.

HOUSTON - Mitt Romney's speech before the nation's oldest civil rights organization Wednesday was meant as an olive branch to the black community, but his sharp criticisms of President Obama and a vow to repeal the Democrat's healthcare plan drew sustained boos and a chilly reception from the audience of black voters. Romney's message was aimed at a larger audience beyond the Houston convention hall - independent and moderate voters particularly. But the tone of his speech still surprised many attendees at the annual convention of the National Assn.

WASHINGTON - Congressional Republicans, who once promised to "repeal and replace" President Obama's healthcare law, for now have all but given up pushing alternatives to the sweeping legislation the president signed in 2010. In the last year and a half, House Republicans have sent the Senate just one 36-page bill designed to limit medical malpractice lawsuits, despite pledging to develop detailed legislation to slow rising healthcare costs, help Americans keep their health plans and broaden access to insurance.
