Two weeks ago Outtakes asked readers to help count the buckles attached to Michael Jackson's "Bad" outfit and, more earthshakingly, explain why the Ungloved One is wearing so many of them. The deluge of loose leaf and post cards and even a typed letter or two was overwhelming. Not one managed to come up with the correct number. According to Jackson's PR people, Michael--who designed the outfit himself--is wearing 46 buckles. Why? The PR people said Michael said there's no special meaning behind them.

Bernard and Green have rolled out all the canards on this one. I will not respond to their charge that business people who question the SCAQMD are anti-environment. I will not respond to the charge that opponents to what the authors view as "rational" regulation are bigoted or racist. But just once it would be nice to read an article like this and have the authors get the science right. The 1989 USC Medical School study makes no links to cause and effect or other factors that would account for the findings.

A new breed of ethnic restaurant is exploding in Orange County: Familiar but under-exploited cuisines are having themselves a field day. Thank the media revolution. Thank the Concorde. Thank your lucky stars. Small ethnic places with relatively exotic pedigrees (say, Vietnamese, Cuban or Thai) have been satisfying from the outset. Their cooking came to us largely intact, with few preconceived notions about our tastes. The more familiar cuisines haven't been as reliable.

Editor's Note: The California & Co. column, "Citrus Cartel Would Make OPEC Jealous" (Jan. 8), generated considerable reader response, particularly from smaller growers. Nearly all were critical of the current marketing system. A representative sampling follows. As a victim of last summer's suburban malathion raids, I found the citrus cartel article illuminating. Considering the many factors working against the citrus industry, loss of tax advantages, image problems and the throes of Mother Nature, isn't it fortuitous that taxpayers footed the multibillion-dollar bill that eradicated the Medfly?
