A 13-year-old girl died of her injuries, becoming the ninth victim of a fire that swept through a Dutch cafe in the town of Volendam, the mayor said. Dutch television, however, quoted a doctor at the main trauma center north of Amsterdam as saying the death toll was 10. With 17 people still in critical condition, the toll could rise, the doctor said.

At least eight people were killed and more than 180 injured when fire swept through a cafe packed with teenagers celebrating the new year in this Dutch tourist town, officials said Monday. Police said the toll was expected to rise as those burned in the harbor-side Het Hemeltje cafe--whose name translates as Small Heaven--die of their injuries. Mayor Frank Ijsselmuiden told a news conference that the official death toll was eight.
