When it comes to politics, people of this island city know Don Sancho's Frijole Poll is rarely wrong. The poll, conducted among customers at Corella's Corral Mexican Restaurant, has correctly picked winners in the last three presidential elections and in all Galveston mayoral contests since 1973. At last count--Wednesday--61% of the restaurant's patrons were selecting Vice President George Bush for victory in the presidential race, while 39% cast beans for Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis.

CKE Restaurants Inc., in an ongoing attempt to reduce debt, said it will sell its Taco Bueno unit for $72.5 million to Jacobson Partners, a closely held New York investment firm. Anaheim-based CKE, which also operates Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast-food hamburger chains, said proceeds from the cash sale should shave its debt, which once stood at a whopping $300 million, to less than $100 million.

Carl Karcher Enterprises, the Anaheim-based fast-food chain, has paid $3.1 million for 10 Wendy's restaurants in Arizona. The company plans to convert the stores to Carl's Jr. restaurants within 60 to 150 days. Karcher Enterprises has said that over the next 2 years it plans to add more than 100 company-owned restaurants and 20 franchised units to its inventory in the Western United States. Most of those stores are slated for Arizona and sections of Northern California. Karcher Enterprises now owns or franchises 482 Carl's Jr. restaurants in California, Arizona, Nevada and Southern Oregon.

A Texas entrepreneur has acquired control of the troubled Hudson's Grill restaurant chain and plans to restructure the company and move its headquarters from Ventura to Dallas. None of five Hudson's-owned units in Ventura County are expected to be affected immediately, but the firm's new head, David L. Osborn, said he hopes to eventually spin off all 13 company-owned restaurants to either franchisees or joint-venture partners, or set up lease-back arrangements.

Alex Meruelo hopes to someday be known as the pizza king of Southern California's Latino community. The energetic, boyish-looking 27-year-old founder of the La Pizza Loca restaurant chain is off to a good start. Since founding his company five years ago, Meruelo has assembled a chain of 26 pizza delivery outlets in mostly Latino neighborhoods of Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Blaming its struggling Hardee's hamburger chain, CKE Restaurants Inc. on Thursday predicted a fourth straight quarter of lower-than-expected earnings and said it will eliminate 150 jobs at Hardee's North Carolina headquarters. CKE, which also operates Carl's Jr. and Taco Bueno Mexican restaurants, said most of the functions at Hardee's Rocky Mount, N.C., offices will be moved to CKE headquarters in Anaheim, creating a single administrative center for all three chains.
