But with all that pressure to be perfect, things can go horribly wrong. There are countless rings to hide, requests for "the most romantic table" and fires to put out when couples decide to break up in the middle of the dining room. Oh those fires. This is the season for wild birds and boar, for elk and all manner of game. Some is flown in from Scotland or Texas or New Zealand. And not every chef or restaurant indulges, so when they do, be ready to take advantage. It's easy to see chefs' fascination with exotic birds and animals. Game's flavor is deep and true. It also takes real skill to cook without drying it out and a keen sense of what flavors to pair with it. And since the supply is sporadic and as certain game comes in out of season, chefs have to be flexible.

The big winner in this year's Hollywood awards season: the local economy. Hundreds of millions of dollars are funneled into hotels, restaurants and limousine companies as Los Angeles hosts the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Academy Awards and related events. The money pumped into the Southern California economy comes at a welcome time. The awards season that stretches from January to March falls within a typically slow period for tourism around the country.

With Kabul's close-knit expatriate community reeling from the deadliest attack on Western civilians in the 12-year Afghanistan conflict, the Taliban, the U.S.-led NATO coalition and Afghan President Hamid Karzai renewed a war of words over civilian deaths that underscored the tension between Washington and Kabul as they haggle over a U.S. military presence in the country after 2014.
