L.A. designer Rich Valenza's answer to the Casual Friday dilemma is a collection of loose-fitting jackets, vests and trousers inspired by vintage menswear. "I searched antique clothing stores in L.A. and New Orleans and found great suits and tuxedos from the '30s," says Valenza, who is probably best-known for founding Re-Style L.A., a scholarship program for inner-city youth.

On the plane to L.A. Tuesday night, French eyewear designer Alain Mikli, in town to launch his new $75-to-$125 Mikli Eyewear line, sketched two styles of glasses for Donna Karan. "One she asked for, and one she didn't," said Mikli, laughing. The simpatico that the designer feels with Karan is vital, says Mikli. Case in point: He declined Michael Jackson's invitation to collaborate on a line of eyewear. "I didn't know how I could translate his imagination."

It's a workday afternoon and except for an occasional docent or security guard, I have the entire Detroit Institute of Arts to myself. I'm alone in the garden court, absorbed by the frescoes of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. I'm overwhelmed by the magnitude of Rivera's angular Amazons. Beyond the elemental symbolism of industry, desire, fertility and creation, what strikes me most is that they look like me and I look like them , the first images of the feminine with which I can identify .
