Viacom plans to open its first retail store today in Chicago, selling items bearing such company brands as MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Nick at Night, "Star Trek" and Paramount Pictures. The Michigan Avenue store is part of Viacom Retail Group and is the first of several Viacom flagship stores planned domestically. Viacom also plans to open Nickelodeon stores in shopping malls. It is following the lead of such companies as Walt Disney Co. and Warner Bros.

Inflation remained restrained in March even as gasoline prices jumped and retail sales advanced for the eighth month in a row, government figures show. The consumer price index rose a modest 0.2%, and the so-called core inflation rate, which excludes food and energy costs, rose just 0.1% for the third consecutive month, the Labor Department said. Retail sales rose 0.2%, boosted by consumers with tax refund checks, the Commerce Department said. The gain follows a revised 1.

Between the bouncy music and the stacks of colorful jeans, visitors to the Benetton store on Chicago's Michigan Avenue might catch a whiff of a growing marketing trend. Mounted high in the corner beside the store entrance, a scent diffuser, installed in November, spreads a bright spring fragrance modeled after Benetton's Verde cologne. "It finishes the emotion we are trying to create in the store," said Robert Argueta, director of visual merchandising for the United Colors of Benetton, who also is testing the scent in Benetton's New York flagship store.

Life Fitness Inc., a division of Bally Manufacturing, has been marketing its computerized rowing machine, the Liferower, for about a year. An unusual feature of the rowing machine is a 13-inch color video screen resembling a computer video game. The screen depicts two racing sculls in the water.

Steven K. Wallace, 32, has been named general manager of the new Parkers' Seafood Grill, slated to open in Balboa in May. The 11,000-square-foot restaurant is one of Stouffer Restaurant Co.'s 83 units across the United States. It will be the major tenant in the Edgewater Place complex, next to the Balboa Ferry and Fun Zone. Parkers' will occupy 50% of the Edgewater Place Complex, taking up all of the second and third levels.

WASHINGTON -- Retail sales surged last month at their fastest pace in 1-1/2 years as consumer spending heated up after a harsh winter. The Commerce Department said Monday that seasonally adjusted retail sales increased 1.1% in March. Officials also revised February's figure up to a strong 0.7%, from an initially reported 0.3%. Economists had expected a 1% increase last month. Americans rushed out to shop as frigid weather lifted in March, propelling retail sales at the fastest pace in a year and a half. The gauge from the Commerce Department surged 1.1% last month from February in its biggest leap since September 2012. Sales boomed 3.8% from March 2013. The strong sales, which beat economists' expectations for a 1% increase, bolstered hopes that the economy would continue to gain momentum after struggling through an especially harsh winter. "One month doesn't answer all the questions, and it's not like we have all-over-the-place exploding growth," said NPD Group analyst Marshal Cohen.

Retailers had a middling March, watching their sales improve from a frigid February while struggling to beat their performance from the same month last year. Two main factors impeded growth last month, according to several reports released Thursday. Spring weather has been slow to come, leaving shoppers still shivering in cooler-than-usual temperatures. And in March 2013, retailers had the benefit of a revenue bump from Easter, which shifted this year to April 20. In one report, analyst Ken Perkins of Retail Metrics Inc. said March same-store sales rose 3.5% from a year earlier, beating expectations for a 2.5% boost.

SACRAMENTO - The recent hacking of customer data from Target Corp. computers is roiling the California Legislature. Last week, two members of the Assembly touted a bill to strengthen consumer safeguards and limit the type of information collected and retained by retailers. The measure, AB 1710, may trigger one of the year's biggest disputes over business-related legislation. "It'll be a big fight, a tough fight," said Bill Dombrowski, president of the California Retailers Assn.

A Federal Reserve rule allowing banks to charge retailers 21 cents to process debit-card transactions has been upheld by a federal appeals panel, a blow to big merchants such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. A lower court judge invalidated the fee cap in July, ruling that the Fed's formula included costs that weren't allowed under the Dodd-Frank regulatory reforms that Congress passed in the aftermath of the financial crisis. But in a ruling Friday for a three-judge panel, Judge David Tatel of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington said the central bank's rules “generally rest on reasonable constructions of the statute.” GAS: See latest prices in Southland, nation Merchants, who had argued that they were entitled to a lower cap, expressed disappointment, while financial firms said they were relieved.

Twenty-eight attorneys general from 24 states, three U.S. territories and Washington, D.C. are pressuring five retailers, including Walgreen Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., to follow the move by CVS Caremark Corp. and end sales of tobacco.  CVS Caremark in early February announced it would stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products. The pharmacy and retail chain, which has increased its business providing medical care through clinics, said "the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent" with its purpose.  Health advocates cheered the move and said it would probably spur other retailers to do the same.  The effort was spearheaded by Eric T. Schneiderman and Michael DeWine, attorneys general of New York and Ohio, respectively.
