The first order of business when the baby boom gets into office is to take revenge on the military for the draft. I declare myself satisfied with the new President. MICHAEL SHERRELL Sebastopol

Those of us who have endured the same pain as Spiegelman can only try and understand his pain-- a pain that will last forever. It's a tragic loss for anyone when a loved one dies, but when a father loses a daughter or son, especially when that loss was a waste, is it any wonder why more people haven't reacted as Jack Spiegelman did? None of us I would hope have the desire to take revenge on another. Isn't it time our judiciary and lawmakers get off their behinds and pass the legislation that the majority wants.

Revenge is the most powerful psyche that consumes and propels the individual and collective unconscious of the entire Middle East. No amount of weapons in Iraq will ever make the leaders of the Middle East sleep comfortably short of killing Saddam and then finding ways to make peace with the people of Iraq lest another Saddam rises again. All Arab and Israeli leaders know how to control the masses through the powerful and pervasive emotion of revenge. Unless the Western mind comprehends what revenge means to the average person in the Middle East and how easy it is to evoke by the leaders, all the editorializing and logic exhibited by the experts and highly paid consultants will not help (the West)

Re "Peter Biehl, 59; Forgave Killers of Daughter," obituary, April 2: I was so saddened to read of the death of Peter Biehl. His passing at such a young age is a loss to a world so caught up in a spiral of violence, hatred and revenge. Since the death of their daughter, Amy, the Biehls' response of forgiveness and love has been a shining beacon for me. Revenge begets more violence and hatred. . May his example live on in other lives. Joan Mortenson Huntington Beach

As reported by your newspaper ["Pasta, Flu and a Ghost," Dec. 3], I've enjoyed Gabriel Ruelas' many excuses for losing to Azumah Nelson. By the way, when is this excuse coming: that he was soundly beaten by a 37-year-old true champion. Ruelas, the Goossens, the pay-per-view announcers and the promoter wanted the fight to be Ruelas' revenge, but Azumah Nelson's remarkable skills in the ring turned it into his revenge. Hey, Gabriel: Quit being such a cry-baby. JEROLD KRESS Los Angeles

CANNES, France--Most of the attention at the Cannes Film Festival this week centers on the big names--Nicolas Refn, Alexander Payne, James Gray. But the springtime cinema gathering can sometimes makes room for someone a little different. Someone, say, like Jeremy Saulnier, a little-known director who, at 36, has used a little pluck and plenty of Kickstarter to defy the stereotypes of the world's most prestigious (and expensive) festival. CHEAT SHEET: Cannes Film Festival 2013 trailers Saulnier's new film, his follow-up to the modestly performing 2007 genre comedy “Murder Party,” premieres Saturday in the Director's Fortnight section, where it is expected to draw attention both for its unusual genesis and unlikely genre spin.
