There are fairy-tale stories. Then there's singer-songwriter Rhian Benson's. Just three years ago, the Ghanaian-born musician was well on a path: a degree in econometrics and mathematical economics from the London School of Economics; a skin-toughening stint on the stock trading floor; a few months of graduate studies at Harvard in the School for Arts and Sciences. Now, somehow, this 26-year-old has become a pop diva in training.

Raphael Saadiq was apologetic, frustrated, inspired. An hourlong set of his modern soul music just wasn't enough, cut short on Wednesday at the House of Blues by an 11 p.m. curfew for the all-ages show. But what the singer-guitarist did deliver was generous enough, continuing a revival he helped ignite as part of the group Tony Toni Tone more than a decade ago. Saadiq's sound has only grown in sophistication in the years since.

A soulful voice to bank on Ask anyone who crowded into the Temple Bar on Dec. 6 to witness Rhian Benson's showcase, and they'll tell you a new voice soon will be echoing across the neo-soul/urban-music landscape. Benson's debut album isn't due until April, but her label, the fledgling Universal City-based DKG Music, has decided to rush out an EP next month.
