After eight days of deliberations, a jury convicted a suburban carpet cleaner Wednesday of the throat-slash murders of three people and the attempted murder of another. The jury of six men and six women who convicted David Lucas, 33, of Spring Valley found that the murders were committed with special circumstance, which could mean the death sentence. The jurors will return to deliberate on the sentence next month. Lucas, originally accused of a string of six murders in the San Diego area, sat impassively as the verdicts were announced.

The former husband of a woman believed killed by David Lucas testified Monday that his ex-wife told him she feared her current husband, whose whereabouts are unknown, because of his involvement with drugs. Richard LaFollette was divorced from Rhonda Strang, 24, at the time she was killed Oct. 23, 1984, in her Lakeside home, along with Amber Fisher, a 3-year-old girl she was baby-sitting. Lucas, 33, of Spring Valley, has been on trial for five months in San Diego Superior Court in the slayings of Strang and Fisher, and those of four other people, as well as the attempted murder of a woman who survived and identified Lucas as her attacker.

Jodie Santiago Robertson tilted her neck Tuesday and showed Superior Court jurors the scars from what she said was an almost fatal encounter with David Lucas. Robertson, 34, testified as the key prosecution witness against Lucas, 33, of Spring Valley, who is charged with killing six people from 1979-1984, including four in East County. Like Robertson, all victims had their throats slashed. Robertson, of Seattle, testified that she had been abducted by Lucas after she left an El Cajon restaurant on June 8, 1984.

A prosecutor described David Lucas as "a killing machine" with "a lust for death" as final arguments in Lucas' murder trial began Wednesday. Lucas, 33, is accused of killing six people, all of whom had their throats slashed. He could face the death penalty if convicted. Deputy Dist. Atty. Dan Williams dramatically recounted the gruesome deaths of the four adults and two children who were killed between 1979 and 1984, and he repeatedly told jurors that it was no coincidence the victims were killed in the same way. Williams described how Gary Fisher took his 3-year-old daughter, Amber, to baby-sitter Rhonda Strang, 24, on Oct. 23, 1984, at her Lakeside house.

The trial of David Allen Lucas, 29, charged with the murder of two women and a 3-year-old child, has been delayed for five months by a judge's decision Wednesday to appoint an extra defense attorney. Attorney Alex Landon was added to the case by Superior Court Judge Barbara Gamer, who changed the trial date from May 7 to Oct. 1 to give Landon time to study the case. Landon said he was appointed because in California a person charged with murder is automatically entitled to a second attorney.
