David Allen Lucas, convicted of the throat-slashing murders of three people and three other brutal crimes, was sentenced to death Tuesday at a hearing marked by emotional pleas for justice from the families of the victims as well as Lucas' lawyers. Lucas, 34, a carpet cleaner from Spring Valley, showed no emotion as San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Palmer Hammes imposed the sentence for the three murder counts, ending one of the longest-running criminal cases in San Diego history.

In an emotional pretrial hearing Monday, murder suspect David Allen Lucas came face to face with a Seattle woman who identified him as the man who abducted her and who she believes slashed her throat June 9. Jody Santiago, 30, the only woman to survive one of the four attacks with which Lucas is charged, told the court she is sure beyond any doubt that Lucas is the man who abducted her as she walked from an El Cajon nightclub.

David Allen Lucas of Spring Valley was ordered Friday to stand trial on three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in connection with a series of knife attacks on women in Lakeside, La Mesa and El Cajon. After a 15-day preliminary hearing, Municipal Court Judge Wayne L. Peterson ruled that Lucas should stand trial for the Nov. 20 slaying of Anne Catherine Swanke, 22, and the Oct. 23 killings of Lakeside baby sitter Rhonda Cheryl Strang, 24, and Amber Fisher, 3.

A single strand of hair found in a Toyota pickup truck registered to murder suspect David Allen Lucas could have belonged to slain University of San Diego student Anne Catherine Swanke, a sheriff's criminologist testified Friday. Charles Harold Merritt Jr. said in a pretrial hearing for Lucas that he also found a bloodstain on the sheepskin seat cover near the center console on the passenger's side of Lucas' truck.
