With some few exceptions, the bel canto operas of Bellini, Donizetti and even Rossini disappeared from the active opera repertory for decades this century. Then American soprano Maria Callas proved in the 1950s and early 1960s that these works could be dramatically and musically powerful. The tide turned. A second wave of great artists kept the momentum.

Joan Sutherland, the Australian tailor's daughter acclaimed as "La Stupenda" during a nearly 40-year operatic career and rated by many critics as the most powerful and technically perfect diva of the 20th century, has died. She was 83. Sutherland died Sunday at her home near Geneva, Switzerland, after a long illness, her family announced. Sutherland achieved stardom in 1959 with a celebrated turn in the title role of Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" at London's Royal Opera House.

Earl Staley's old-fashioned and colorful production of Gounod's "Faust," created for Houston Opera in the 1980s and last seen at San Diego Opera exactly 13 years ago, has returned to Civic Theatre. It is a striking, handsome, beautifully lit production, with gorgeous costumes, and its revival Saturday night was happily applauded by a full house of opening-nighters. The singing, quite acceptable but undistinctive, is nothing to shout about, yet the musical leadership is expert.

There are many reasons not to miss San Diego Opera's revival--after 25 years--of Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette"--old-fashioned, massive and gorgeously lit sets and costumes, an inspired (for once) orchestra in the pit conducted by a genuine expert at the French repertoire, and the old tunesmith's irresistible score, among others. Most important and most crucial, however, are the two singers in the title roles, Welsh soprano Rosemary Joshua and American tenor Richard Leech.

Things have been looking up this season at once-beleaguered Opera Pacific. The Orange County company's latest production, Donizetti's "Fille du Regiment," conducted by the redoubtable Richard Bonynge--a longtime authority on this ebullient score--also promised much at Tuesday's opening night in Segerstrom Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

Adolphe Adam is known today mostly as composer of the ballet "Giselle" and the Christmas carol "Cantique de Noel" (O Holy Night). But he wrote a considerable number of stage works, including this once quite successful comic opera. (It premiered in Paris in 1849.) The slight plot involves an eternal triangle: a young wife, an old husband, a young lover. The music is light and graceful, though it makes great virtuosic demands on the soprano.
