AMAGANSETT, N.Y. - Some actors take a part because they admire a director's vision or love the script. Richard Gere signed on to his new Wall Street cautionary tale "Arbitrage" because he liked how the filmmaker responded when he slammed him against a wall. Gere and Nicholas Jarecki were dining at the upstate N.Y. bed-and-breakfast Gere owns, discussing the actor's potential involvement in the dramatic thriller that opened Friday to strong reviews. Then Gere made an odd request: He wanted Jarecki to read with him as the wife of Gere's character.

Richard Gere is on roll. Since January, when the 63-year-old actor's Wall Street-set drama "Arbitrage" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to a string of glowing reviews, buzz surrounding his star turn as a morally compromised billionaire financier has turned into a veritable din of impending awards season accolades. None of the gurus of gold, however, predicted Gere's current Hollywood hat trick. The preternaturally well-preserved performer's accomplishment: Nabbing a trifecta of lifetime achievement awards - from the Hollywood Film Awards, the Zurich Film Festival and the Hamptons Film Festival - in what must be record time: just under two months flat.

Richard Gere tried to quell a storm in India over a public kiss he gave a Bollywood star at an AIDS awareness event, apologizing Friday for any offense. Gere's embrace and kiss of actress Shilpa Shetty last week sparked several noisy demonstrations by hard-line Hindu groups and a flurry of legal complaints, which ended with a judge in the northwestern city of Jaipur issuing an arrest warrant for the two stars for violating obscenity laws.

'The Hunting Party' Genius, $28.95 Richard Gere earned critical kudos last year for his work in two films little seen outside of advance screening rooms: "The Hoax" and "The Hunting Party." The latter, which comes to DVD Tuesday, sees Gere's down-on-his-luck journalist stumble onto the trail of a Bosnian war criminal with longtime pal Terrence Howard and young Jesse Eisenberg in tow; incredibly the trio is mistaken for a CIA hit squad.

With awards season in full swing, two Oscar hopefuls -- director Robert Zemeckis ("Flight") and actor Richard Gere ("Arbitrage") -- are being feted with retrospectives at the American Cinematheque. "Who Framed Smart Entertainment: An In-Person Tribute to Robert Zemeckis" is to kick off Nov. 26 at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica with two of the director's early works: the 1984 hit comedy-romance-adventure "Romancing the Stone," with Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, and the 1980 comedy "Used Cars," with Kurt Russell and Jack Warden.

Just before the hour is up, the man sitting in the chair says an astonishing thing. He says: "Read my book. That's who I really am." This is astonishing because the man speaking is not a novelist or a memoirist. He is Richard Gere, and the book he is speaking of is a book of photographs. Photographs he has taken of Tibetans. With a few landscapes and Mongols thrown in. It is a gorgeous book, called "Pilgrim."

It's slightly depressing that some of the most riveting recent disaster films are dramas driven by precisely the sort of deceit that helped derail Wall Street. Last year there was the extraordinarily callous desperation of "Margin Call's" moneymen. Now comes "Arbitrage," taking a sophisticated swing at a hedge-fund magnate who is bankrolled by, and bets with, other people's money. Writer-director Nicholas Jarecki squarely lands that punch, creating a tense and chilling horror story for financially fraught times.
