A 28-year-old Anaheim man was held on $250,000 bail today on suspicion of shooting a retired Buena Park police captain in a robbery last month at the victim's Buena Park flower shop. Jerry D. Dunham was arrested Thursday night and booked at Orange County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery and attempted murder. (Earlier story, Part II, Page 3.) Retired Capt. Robert Coovert was shot in the head and chest at his florist shop in the 6000 block of Orangethorpe Avenue on April 24. He underwent surgery to remove his kidney and spleen and to repair his left eye and is in good condition today, hospital officials said.

It happened on the railroad tracks near George Bellis Park in Buena Park, too quickly to really think about, but with just enough time to react. McMillen, a Buena Park police officer, saw what he thought was a man running toward him with a rifle.

A Buena Park man was arrested Wednesday in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old alleged gang member. The man's 19-year-old son was also arrested, but Buena Park police said he was released late Wednesday. Pedro Lopez Contreras Sr., 42, and Pedro Lopez Contreras Jr., 19, were arrested about 9 a.m. in the slaying of Raymond Lacaro Casarez of Fullerton on Tuesday night in Buena Park, police spokesman Richard McMillen said. Police declined to discuss details about the release of the son, but police Detective John Burns said the department will ask the district attorney's office to file a murder charge against the father.

Police arrested three men Thursday accused of trying to sell $100,000 worth of construction equipment stolen from the Las Vegas area. Officer Richard McMillen said the suspects, Charles Nocolosi, 19, of Harleyville, Pa.; Mark J. Alvarez, 24, and Curtis Barnes, 21, both of Downey, were arrested on suspicion of possession and sale of stolen property. He said police were alerted after the men tried to sell the equipment to several equipment rental yards in Buena Park for about half its value.

Two people died Thursday morning when the 1972 Volkswagen minibus in which they were riding hit a power pole, police said. The passenger was identified as Michelle B. Perez, 19 of Stanton. The driver, a 36-year-old male, was not identified pending notification of relatives, Buena Park Police Officer Richard McMillen said. The accident occurred at 8:57 a.m.

A 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed when he collided with a car, police said Tuesday. David Malcolm Balbirnie II of Buena Park was eastbound on Malvern Avenue about 6 p.m. Monday when he collided with a westbound Buick that was turning left onto Falls Way, Buena Park Police Officer Richard McMillen said. Balbirnie was transported to Medical Center of La Mirada, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m., McMillen said. Police did not release the name of the car's driver.

A Garden Grove man escaped serious injuries early this morning when the truck he was driving at a high speed went out of control and broke apart before bursting into flames, Buena Park police officials said. Henry H. Herrera, 52, was thrown from his tractor-trailer near of La Palma and La Costa avenues, Police Lt. Gary Hicken said. "He apparently fell asleep," Hicken said before the truck hit a palm tree and flew into the air shortly before 1 a.m.

A 17-year-old suspected of robbing a convenience store today was arrested after driving a stolen vehicle off a freeway embankment during a high-speed police chase, authorities said. The suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, was treated for minor injuries. A passenger, Brian David Hall, 19, is in critical but stable condition at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, Officer Richard McMillen said. Both are from Corona, he said.

Police investigators Sunday night were searching for a 10-year-old diabetic boy who ran away from home over the weekend, raising fears that he could become ill, a police spokesman said. Officer Richard McMillen said Shane Bradley Burns was last seen at 4 p.m. Saturday. He said a 15-year-old brother discovered Shane missing when he returned from the store to their home in the 7300 block of Santa Elena Street.
