The Orlando Magic dropped the word "interim" from Coach Richie Adubato's title, saying he will be retained for the remainder of the season. Adubato replaced Brian Hill, who was fired on Feb. 18, has a 6-0 record after Friday's 94-73 victory over San Antonio. "We're very pleased to see how our players have reacted and responded to Richie Adubato's leadership and his staff," General Manager John Gabriel said. "Naturally, the win-loss record speaks for itself."

Assistant coach Gar Heard was named interim coach, but Maverick officials said Heard won't be considered as a permanent replacement. "The team is going to struggle and we know that because when you go (with) young (players), it's tough," Maverick General Manager Norm Sonju said. "We just feel strongly that the development of the players is something we have to have right now."

Down nine points with just over three minutes to play, the New York Liberty came up with an impressive defensive effort and beat the Charlotte Sting 61-57 in the opening game of WNBA's Eastern Conference finals.
