Villanova guard Maalik Wayns, a sturdy junior who had been averaging more than 20 points a game, squared up for three-point shots, moved through the lane as if he were invisible only to appear at the basket for layups and generally created shots from everywhere and scored a career-high 29 points Friday. Yet it was St. Louis Coach Rick Majerus who was praising his players for their great defense, in particular against Wayns. The Billikens, who had already roundly defeated Washington from the Pac-12 Conference, grabbed a no-doubt 80-68 win against the Wildcats from the Big East and advanced to the championship game of the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Every so often, Rick Majerus comes to town and reminds us of what might have been. Right now, he is coach of the St. Louis University Billikens. If they have any sense in St. Louis, they are counting their blessings, and not just the basketball fans. This is a man as accomplished as they come in his sport. It is also a man as complicated as they come in life. His basketball team is in Anaheim this weekend to play in the 76 Classic, a creation of ESPN, as is much of the sports landscape these days.

ST. LOUIS -- The sweater is a different color, but the person inside it, working the sidelines, is the same. Rick Majerus is back. Not Michael Jordan-esque back. No fireworks and brass bands yet. Rick Majerus, 59, decided to return to coaching basketball after a three-year absence, agreeing Friday to a six-year contract with St. Louis, the school announced in a statement. An analyst with ESPN the last three years, Majerus has a coaching record of 422-147 with 15 postseason appearances. St.

Like a train at a commuter station, he came and went quickly. Had we gotten to know him, had Los Angeles been exposed, for any decent period of time, to this giant man with similar-sized heart and emotional problems, it might have been big-time love. But the man with the Santa Claus shape undelivered his Christmas present before we had time to unwrap it. And so, now it is, mostly, Rick Majerus, we hardly knew ye. Unfortunately, I knew him and still do, better than most.

There are two times to be skeptical at a news conference: whenever an athlete says it's not about the money, and whenever a coach says it's about health. Rick Majerus cited health concerns for his abrupt give-back of the USC job Monday, only five days after he stood in the same room and said his health was fine, so now we can begin the guessing game for the real reason. These heart issues can't be examined with an electrocardiograph.
