Richard Pitino was regarded as one of the nation's up-and-coming young coaches at Florida International and comes with a last name that draws immediate respect in all corners of college basketball. That combination was too good for Minnesota to pass up. Pitino has agreed to take over for the fired Tubby Smith , the university announced Wednesday evening. Athletic Director Norwood Teague said the final terms of the contract would be worked out as the week goes on and Pitino was expected to be introduced by Friday.

Butler Coach Brad Stevens turned down UCLA on Friday, leaving Athletic Director Dan Guerrero to look elsewhere for a basketball coach. Guerrero had focused his attention on Stevens this week after Shaka Smart agreed to a contract extension at Virginia Commonwealth. UCLA and Stevens talked, but they did not reach a formal negotiation stage. Stevens, whose Butler teams reached the national title game in 2010 and 2011, decided to remain in Indiana. Stevens was UCLA's first choice after Guerrero fired Ben Howland on Sunday.

NEW ORLEANS — Louisville Coach Rick Pitino , after Saturday's NCAA national semifinal defeat, had the courage to compare Kentucky freshman center Anthony Davis to Bill Russell . Sacrilege? "When you see this young man at the collegiate level, you realize why they're so good," Pitino said of Davis. "Not that their other players aren't, but he's so much of a factor. " Davis had 18 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots in Kentucky's 69-61 win against Louisville.

NEW ORLEANS — It's no secret that Kentucky Coach John Calipari and Louisville's Rick Pitino are not the best of friends. Friday, though, they came together to tape a segment for Jim Rome's new television show. How did it go? "The table was flipped over and people were rolling around, but I'm not going to say more, and I'll let you guys watch it on CBS," Calipari said. He was kidding — we think. Kentucky and Louisville face each other Saturday in a Final Four semifinal.

Reporting from Phoenix -- Rick Pitino coached Louisville past Florida and then, up the ladder, all the way through the net-cutting ceremony. He coached Louisville back from 11 points down, in the second half, and then shouted out the post-victory assignments. After Louisville's 72-68 victory over Florida on Saturday to clinch the NCAA West regional, Cardinals players took turns cutting snips of net at US Airways Center. It came down to one last strand. "All right, Chris," Pitino barked to senior guard Chris Smith, "take it down.

From Phoenix — Louisville Coach Rick Pitino will have only himself to blame himself if he is outcoached and loses to Florida's Billy Donovan in Saturday's West Regional title game at US Airways Center. If not for Pitino, there probably would not have been a "coach" Donovan. "Billy the Kid" would have gone straight, without fanfare, to "Billy the Adult. " Donovan was an out-of-shape, ineffectual guard at Providence College in 1985-86 when Pitino took over a program coming off an 11-20 season.

Reporting from Phoenix -- The NCAA West Regional got an unexpected bonus Thursday night with Florida's 68-58 victory over Marquette at US Airways Center. The second semifinal upset of the night sets up a Saturday regional final pitting Florida Coach Billy Donovan against Louisville's Rick Pitino. The pupil vs. mentor matchup was made possible when both lower-seeded schools in the West prevailed. Not long after No. 4 Louisville knocked top-seeded Michigan State out, No. 7 Florida eliminated No. 3 Marquette.

From Phoenix — The best news about the A-list roster of stars preparing for NCAA regional play is that a few are actually players. Even better: Some are seniors. It's no secret coaches have soaked up most of the glory since the NBA started admitting teenagers. We get it: It's hard to grow attached to future lottery picks who don't make it to their freshman spring break. Coaches … you can't get rid of them. They consume airtime with their fancy suits, soap-opera stories and postgame microphone micromanagement.

A Kentucky woman was convicted Thursday of demanding millions of dollars from Rick Pitino to keep secret their one-night stand in a restaurant, then claiming the Louisville basketball coach raped her after he reported the extortion. Karen Cunagin Sypher, 50, of Louisville, was found guilty of three counts of extortion, two counts of lying to the FBI and one count of retaliating against a witness. She stared at the ceiling as the verdict was read, while one of her sons wept openly.
